Do you have the owners manual for your R1150RT? It lists some viscosity ratings and classifications.

Personally, I would suggest any high quality 20W50 engine oil for your bike. You can use a synthetic if the engine is fully broken in (over 10,000 miles) I use Castrol Syntec in my machine.

There are many choices... since the oil only lubricates the engine on these bike and is not shared with the gearbox.

Hoep this is helpful!

Yup.. use 20w-50.... that's what I use on mine 1150RT, and is what BMW in germany recommend. =)

My bmw rt 1150 starts fine but when revving up a knocking is present, what would be the cause

most likely spun a rod bearing if the oil ran low..the oil amount is very small and leaks are deadly for small engines..be looking for another engine if youre gonna keep the bike..sorry the truth hurts abit..mine was a 76 honda 200 and a 79 kawasaki .. traded the 750 for a flatbed trailer I used behind my suburban for years..

Can I use a non BMW brand synthetic motor oil such as Mobil 1 in my 2004 1150RT?

Yes, is the short answer to your question. The BMW R1150RT engine will run and be protected quite well using a quality oil of viscosity listed in your owners manual. I would suggest a 20W50 for most applications.

Just bought it used. no owner's manual. how do i check the oil level?

Here is the most accurate way to check the oil on your R-RT.

Ride bike till it is fully warmed up - 10 minutes
Park bike on side stand for 10 minutes or longer.... overnight.
Put bike on center stand and look at oil level window on lower left side of engine. Oil level should be inside the red circle. Do not overfill!!

The absolute best time to check the oil is when the engine is cold and all oil has drained out of oil cooler and lines into the engine sump. Usually before riding... Once properly broken in, your engine will consume very little oil.

Has anyone blown a rod berring? did the oil light come on?

the oil light is controlled by the oil pressure switch which indicates the oil pressure is too low.and bearings will fail pluss excess heat in engine ,sorry but find why pressure dropped before rebuilding engine

2003 BMW R 1150 RT Engine bogs down on hard acceleration from 1100 RPM

I'm guessing the TPS is bad, located on the Throttle body. If that doesn't do it check fuel pressure, have had fuel pumps cause that problem esp if the bike has been in accident, cracks the fuel pump inlet tube causing it to lose pressure.
