Battery is charged but no lights showing, lights show and bike turns over very slowly on jump leads, have i overcharged the battery, bike not been started for twelve months and battery was new then, i have trickle charged it every month

With a voltmeter check to see if terminals show several volts higher than battery specs when bike is running. If so then replace battery. If not have charging system checked out.

It sounds like your alternator is not charging the battery. Fit a new battery remember to undo negative lead first to remove and fit positive lead first to refit the battery. When the new battery is filled please charge it using less than 1 Amp DO NOT use a car charger or try to jump start it. Your new battery should show 12.5 to 13 volts on a meter for a 12 volt system and 6.3 to near 7 volts for a 6 volt system. Start the scooter and check across the battery terminals your meter should show about 14.4 V for 12 volt battery and about 7.5 V for a 6 Volt one. No voltage increase means your charging circuit is not working. Either the alternator or rectifier(regulator) are not operating correctly. Worst case scenario is both units dead.

My first question is did the bike work OK before it was stripped and painted?
It is possible paint has got onto the main earthing (ground) point on the chassis/frame. I would first check that there is a good earth connection from battery to frame and all light units. Other than the turn signals coming on do any other lights show when you turn the ignition on? If no I would try checking the battery. Remove the battery from the bike AND THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT remove the negative lead first then the positive.
Check the battery has voltage approx 12.5 to 13.2 volts is OK, next connect a 21 watt bulb to the terminals and see if the light dims over 1 minute. If OK get a dedicated motorcycle battery charger (a charger for a car is no good) with an output of less than 1 amp. Charge the battery for a few hours. Refit battery into your bike AND THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT TOO re-connect the positive lead first then the negative.

WARNING never try to jump start your bike from a car/van etc. The more powerful batteries in these vehicles will fry your bikes electrics.

ALWAYS use a dedicated motorcycle battery charger.

ALWAYS remove and refit your battery as stated above.

I would think that your vehicle has a voltage regulator built into the alternator, but I am not sure. I do not have alot of Jag experience. But this sounds like what your problem is. The voltage regulator is stuck and making the alternator put out full charge and wreaking havoc with your electrical system.

Hi, firstly you are probably rite about the clicking being related to a discharged battery, i would suggest you try some jump leads of a car or another battery my guess is it will start or turn over and the clicking will stop, suzuki motorcycles of this eara did have some charging probs, running with a discharged battery for a prolonged period is not recomended.
Secondly its not unusual for even a new battery to become low state even when left continuasly on chage with a trickle charger, and eventually the battery.becomes dead through overcharging

Take your battery out and have it load tested. It is a classic case of switching the bike on, the battery cracks between the cells( the lights flash on and off). All the cells read full charge, an OHM meter shows 12 volts, but there is no power going past the crack in the battery plates.You can jump the bike from another battery, if it quits when you disconnect the cables you know you have a bad battery.

Sounds like a dead or shorted cell battery. Charging system is probably working but is showing overcharge since it is trying to charge a brick. Replace the battery and all should be well.

Sounds as if battery has internal short. Also have charging system checked. If doing yourself check amperage also. Charging volts and no amps wont work or overcharging. Over charging will ruin a new battery. Also make sure you have clean solid connections between cable ends and battery. Take cables off and clean very good poor contacts will give false readings when checking system.

nada. No gauges no lights absolutely nothing. All that happens is when I turn the ignition switch off the tach bounces backward quickly about 6 or 8 times. I put the bike on the battery tender and within 20 minutes it was showing in good shape. Still nothing. Checked battery leads. No problem. I checked all the fuses around the battery and up next to the dash. Nothing there. I R & R'd all of the relays next to the dash and the 3 behind the tool kit with the same relays off of my Mille. Still nothing. I changed the odd relay next to the battery that says UP on it. Don't know what it is but it rattles. Maybe a tip over sensor? Nothing. I tried jumping the bike off with a portable jump start battery. Nothing. I switched the battery out. Nothing. I pulled the front fairing and checked all connections. Found everything to be just fine. Put a battery charger on the fully charged battery and suddenly got ignition lights and headlights. Turned the key back off and once again nothing. A few more times it would come back and show lights and gauges but when I went to start everything went dead again. I'm thinking maybe the ignition switch? It doesn't seem worn out at all. I jiggled the key didn't seem to make a difference. The bike only has about 10k miles on it. Any ideas? ,Some 'friend'... did this ever happen to him? Good diag work so far, and I don't have anything specific to look at. Hopefully one of the sm-m-m-marter members can assist. ,,,
