An auxiliary input allows you to select an external source and play it through the cd player's amplifier. It's often used for iPods and MP-3 players. Typically you just need an inexpensive patch cable that connects the headphone output from your portable player to the input on the CD player. After that you can select "AUX" as another source like CD or Tuner, and whatever's playing on the portable unit will be heard through the speakers.
Auxiliary inputs can be on the front or the rear of the CD player. Front aux inputs are typically 3.5mm stereo plugs, similar to a small headphone jack. Rear aux inputs can be RCA jacks or a 3.5mm jack. If you have a CD player with a rear aux input, a cable needs to be connected at the time of installation. Then the other end can be routed to whatever location in the vehicle you want to keep your portable player while you're using it with the CD player.
Front aux jacks are more convenient for quick connecting/disconnecting the portable player, but they tend to wear out over time.

The auxillary port is on the front of my in-dash AIWA radio/CD/MP3 unit. I have never used the auxillary port. The AIWA currently is off but the security flap is open. When thee ignition is turned on the radio plays, but I can't sswitch to CD or try to eject the CD without it locking up the unit with "Please remove the aux plugs" displaying in marquee fashion. The only thing I cna do then is to turn off the ignition switch and then the display continues for about 15 seconds and then shuts itsself off.
When the batteery went dead I had to get a jump start and I think that started the whole rCD problem. I found my manual and it said that if a CD does not operate properly then press the reset button with a pointed object, so I used a streched out paperclip anad reset the unit. It then powered down and I turned off the ignition AND finally the security flap closed properly!! I started the ignition again and the flap opened and I now have my AIWA working properly. NOTE: I had to reset all settings I had previously done, sincee the reseet put them back to the original defaults.
