There is a rattling noise coming from my engine (top), there is no loss of power, could this be the cam chain? if so how do I adjust it.

YES! nice bike by the way i wish i had one "blackbird" this happened to mine and another friends Hurricane we both had the noise and one day he sent me a text video saying listen to my bike and it sounded like **** ..what had heppened is that the chain jumped a tooth and the timing was way off it was amazing to listen too and it sounded like it was going to explode he found out that his cam chain tensioner was broken..so i decided to check mine and boy was i glad i did, when i took it out it was leaking oil past the seal, was wobbly side to side play, and was worn on one side more than the other..so i went to a salvage yard and picked up one that looked in decent shape and installed it and have put another 10k on it, the chain noise is still there but not quite as bad now..im sure that the chain is stretched especially the way i ride it...i race it at the track and put extreme loads on it. so you'd better have a look at the tensoiner and dont replace it yourself unless you know exactly what your doing..because the dealer will probably try and sell you an after market style, and these are a highly critical in the set up or adjustment if you want to call it that, and if you do it wrong..it will damge the engine..just try and get an original stock one.

I finally got beat today!..yes after three years and taking on all types of bikes, street and track, I raced a guy on a XX 99 Blackbird the first time i got him by surprise!... but he made sure on the second attempt that it wouldn't happen again...finally! someone that knows how to Drag race a bike without wheeling it!..oh and by the way i was on my crappy old 87 Hurricane that has the stretched timing chain and in need of a top-end rebuild. If i was on my 88 though i think it would have been a tie! He said his was the first year that they introduced fuel injection also. You have a very impressive bike Donaldmac!

Aye cheers! If you like drag racing then there is a cool road just by Ullapool on the A835, you can see every inch of it and it has a sweet surface, it then closes into a cool twisty road with plenty of various length straights, I put a power commander on my ride, it was awesome. Thanks for the feedback, I've decided to do my valves as well as changing the cam tensioner, cheers

What could cause clicking in motor 91 gsxr 1100 no power loss

Could be a couple of things, Also im not familiar with the gsxr engine but with my zxr iv had the motor clicking either when the cam chain has stretched a bit but not enough for the adjuster to take up the slack or when the valve clearances have needed adjustment, if one of the exhaust stud's has come loose can cause a noise but would probably make more of a knocking than clicking, Might be worth checking the manual to see what the service intervals are on the cam chain and valve clearances for that motor.

Rattling sound coming from top of engine

sounds like a sticking lifter or the cam chain try changing the oil. If that con't work have the cam chains adjusted. that should do it. It is normal to have some noise coming from the overhead cam.If that doesn't work have it checked out by a certified mechanic. good luck

I own a 2004 BMW R1200CL. Almost every time I crank the engine I can hear the valves rattle. I have checked and adjusted the valve clearances to spec. The rattle goes away after the engine starts, but...

Yep, most of these bikes do rattle on startup. The noise is from cam chain slack. A hydraulic tensioner is used in the engine on each side as there are two cam chains. The tensioner leaks down after the engine sits for a while and the chain rattles for a few seconds till the tensioner gets pumped back full of oil again. Once the chain is tight again, then no noise.

BMW came out with an improved tensioner (doesn't leak down as quickly) that you can install on your engine to fix the rattle. Note that it is much easier to change the RHS tensioner than the LHS one.

Good Luck!
