1999 Triumph Adventurer replace shift shaft

I have just bought a 1999 Triumph Adventurer. The short end piece of the spline of the gear selector shaft has broken off. Upon inspection, it has been repaired before by having a hole drilled and part of a bolt to hold it together. How hard is it to change out the whole shaft and replace it with a new one. Is there much involved and can I do it myself?

SOURCE: broken throttle cable

This may be a real hard job. You will have to remove the fuel tank, If your bike has a large air box under the tank you will have to remove it. Now you should be able to see any cables to the carbs and any clips or brackets that hold them in place. You may have to remove the carb's also - reason will be to gain access to the cable ends, they have a ball that fits into a slot on the carb linkage and can be very tight or hard to reach. First things things first, disconnect the battery. Hope this helps you get started.

SOURCE: I have a 2008 Triumph Sprint ST 1050. How do you

There are 2 nuts on the bar from footrest to gear-change, 1 has a right-hand thread & the other has a left-hand thread.
Undo them both then turn the bar to alter its length thereby raising & lowering the gear-change height

Ride safe

How do I fix the problem of shifting into gear? The boat will not get out of neutral.

look for a broken gear selector cable if remote from a console or connection if at the motor
the control is by a shaft the goes down into the leg with a crank on the end in the box that shifts a dog forward or back
the cable or hand piece pulls a crank lever at the top to move the shaft

Wh does 1st gear jump out on accelerator release ?

There are a few things to check. Engine and transmission mounts replace any broken or perished . 1st gear selector shaft has a indent ball and spring to locate the shaft when in gear, check the spring is not broken. The gear box bearings may be worn giving the drive shaft to much end play. also check gear shift linkage is not worn.

Loose gear selector

the lever itself? is it the type with the 10mm bolt going through the lever (into a splined shaft)?
if so then either the thread's gone in the bolt/lever or the splines have gone on the shaft, otherwise it's the gear selector shaft/bearings within the box.
Hope this helps

Grinding when changing gear

(great old bike Kevin) Sounds like selector forks, cams and/or grooves on selector barrel are at wear limits. Drain gearbox oil over magnet and check for metal splinters. Metal silt is common but shiny shards (very small) or foil like pieces indicate excessive wear. These old girls will still keep turning but will jam eventually. I suggest you pull selector mechanism down and either shim behind the cam plate spring or get replacement selector barrel. In the mean time thoroughly flush and give her some good quality gear oil of the lighter viscosity. Drive and driven shaft end bearings are often at fault on long haul m'bikes also. Replacement is inevitable.

Oil

Most oils are preferential, but don't use car or low friction special oils in your bike, and beware of detergent oils if you don't know the service history, they will break down in a bike and can dislodge accumulated crud. To be safe10/40- 20/50 Motorcycle oil for engine/ part synthetic if you like, but not a necessity sae 80s gearbox, Dot 4 clutch and prepacked branded long life coolant with integral lubricant for cooling.
