Oil light comes on when the engine is warm.engine noise is louder when warm.
Hi!!
Check oil level, add to level if needed.
I have an 99 Intrepid also and the Oil Pressure Sensor was leaking thru it, I replaced it ($13) and my problem went away. You should take a look at yours, it is located on the passenger side, engine block almost under the exhaust pipe. Also add a bottle of Valve and Lifter Oil Additive, it will take care of the noise.
Don't forget to rate this post!! Good Luck!!
If the noise is loud and constant and theit does even when idleing, the motor is shoot, if the knocking was only whene only when accelerating, could be knock or camshaft sensor. As a last resource, use straight 40W or 50W oil and a additive for the knocking, it will quiet the noise. The bottom line is that the motor is shoot and the more you drive it,the more damage to the engine.
I've just tought of something. Check oil pump pressure and/or scan the stored codes in the computer, you can borrow a scanner from AutoZone and we go from there!!
Just wondering how did it go with the noise?? I you need further assistence, don't hesitate to ask.
I have a 2000 intrepid with the 3.2L engine and i also had the oil light coming on at odd times and it was the oil pressure sensor also. easy fix.!!

Hi! May I ask when was your last engine oil change? Maybe now is the time. When the oil is burnt it makes annoying noise coming from the engine plus a poor performance can be expected. I suggest that you have an oil change and please do check on the radiator fan. If the fan motor is weak it makes the engine hot and run sluggish. Please write back and tell me how it goes. Hope this helps and have a good one!
Thanks for the clarification. If the engine noise gets loud then you may need to have the valve clearances checked. If the gap of the valves are too far it will definitely makes a knocking sound. Have it checked and see how it goes.
We just have to save the engine before it gets worse
when the engine was running,i checked the oil dipstick and found out the oil covered only the full marker part of the dipstick and nothing more than that.usually when the engine is running, the oil would cover parts of the dipstick everywhere not only the lower part of it.is this normal for the 3.2 l?
Definitely its not normal. Please add up oil and check if the check engine light will go off. Please write back and tell me how it goes.

Hi, if the oil light comes on when you rev the engine at high revs and also comes on when the engine is warm then this means one of 2 things it either means your oil pump is up the shoot and needs repairing( this is a big job) or it means you have an oil leak and the oil pressure drops when the oil gets thinner due to being warm, so the first thing to do would be to have a good look around the engine for signs of oil leaks, its a good idea to get a big piece of cardboard and place this under your engine when you are parked up then check for signs of oil after it has been standing.
how ever you may not see oil on the floor due to you have a scratch guard under the car where the sump is so the oil my be falling on this and not the floor.
check the oil level if this is low the oil light will come on when warm or when engine is revved due to it being pumped round the engine, so check the level to see if its low.
if the level is ok and you find no leaks then one thing to do first would be to get the oil and oil filter changed and make sure you get the correct oil type for your car to ensure its the right type for your engine.
another problem you could have is a blocked breather from the cam cover to the sump this is an over flow for any oil and air that builds up in the engine you will find this towards the back of the cam cover and its pushed onto the cam cover and it goes down to just above the sump so you could remove this and check for blockage.
but if after changing the oil and filter the light still comes on then the chances are you oil pump is failing and is no longer keeping the oil pressure at normal running power, this will be bad for your car and can cause the engine to seize so if you need to drive the car only drive it when the lights off else you will need to get new engine, it dont take long for the engine to be starved from oil and then seize.
i hope i have given you a few things to check and be getting on with
let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok
the oil light goes off when revs are high.but engine noise is louder.no oil leaks.
the engine knock getting louder indicates the engine is starved of oil, its not worth driving the car as you will cause damage to the crank bearings, main bearings and the cam shaft and bearings, this will mean getting a recon or second hand engine, as its stands it looks like you need oil pump, how ever this is a big job to do and it involves stripping the engine down to get the old pump out and the new one back in.
its a lot of work but it should save your engine from further damage and should mean you wont need to buy an engine, if you keep using the car as it is the engine will seize, damage may have all ready been done but you wont know until the pump has been changed.
hope this is some help to you
