Do you mean =out of the carb or out of the exhaust,,well carb backfiring is a very weak mixture and its still burning when the inlet valve opens ,and exhaust is that there is a air leak at an exhaust joint and the heat of the exhaust with the air leak ignites unburnt fuel

Why is my kawasakivn1500backfireing

Backfiring is a sign that you have an air leak somewhere. Check the vacuum lines on the throttle body, they become old and crack.

Where is the fuel filter located for a 2001 kawasaki vulcan 1500 classic

Where is the throttle body throats on a kawasaki vulcan 1500 Fi

The solution is simple. Clean the carbon ring out of the throttle body throats using your choice of scrubber (old toothbrush, Q-Tip etc) and some carb/throttle body cleaner. Hold your throttle all the way open or use your throttle lock to do it while you scrub the ring away. Now, ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! And enjoy a nice smooth idle again. BTW if you turned the idle up so the engine would run you'll probably find it's now idling way too fast. Crank it back down to the recommended 950 (or whatever your owners manual recommends).

My friends Vulcan is backfiring thru the carb. Any ideas on what may cause this problem?

Check out the inlet tappet clearance as they could be to tight OR
A burnt out inlet valve seat having a slight burn trace or a Cracked seat OR the timing is out of wack by 1 or 2 mm.
Once you have check out the above and fixed the problem you will be riding high . Ron
