Starter works but gears seem to free spin, wont crank engine

I replaced the starter. took side cover off and starter spins gears but something is not engaging because there is no cranking of the engine. The day the problem happened I started the bike and rode home. Parked in the driveway and shut the bike off. Opened the garage door and attempted to restart the bike and just got a spinning sound from the starter. The engine would not even attempt to crank. I have a 2002 V Star 1100.

Sounds like the sprag clutch has failed. If you can see the large gear that sits behind the rotor and its turning but the rotor isnt turning the sprag clutch has failed. Very costly. usualy you would have a missed start eg not engaging every now and then before this fails all together.

wouyld the sprag clutch failure also stop the bikes gears from engaging

Starter motor just spins on a triumph sprint st 955i

As a rule motorcycle starters connect directly to a gear or through a chain that will drive that gear to turn the engine. This gear the starter connects to, is a one way clutch, in other words it will only lock in the direction the starter turns it, and it will turn freely in the other direction.
If you are positive that the starter is turnning, this one way clutch gear would be the thing to check. Usually this envolves removing one of the engine side covers to get to it. With the starter removed , you can check it by spinning the gear in both directions. If it spins in both directions is not good! Also, If you just remove only the side cover you can see if by turning the starter the gear spins. If the gear turns without engage the crank then you will know that the the one way clutch gear is no good as well. (do not run the engine, just spin it and turn it off, it's only to check.) Be known that, I do not know the configuration of this motorcycle. However, the above info is true to most motorcycles.
Hope it helps you!

Hi NEED HELP!!!! I HAVE A SUZUKI GSX1100E. SHE WONT START AFTER OVER REVVING. THE STARTER TURNS OVER VERY FAST BUT DONT TURN THE MOTOR. I HAVE PUT HER IN GEAR AND TURN THE STARTER AND SHE WONT EVEN JUMP...

If the starter turns but does not turn the engine over, you can do a couple minor things to check why. Pull the starter off, have it checked at an Auto Parts Store, like O'Riley, which does the tests free, and see if the starter has had a pin sheared in the Bendix, or if it does not spin the bendix out. If this is the case, just buy a new starter, and get the lifetime warranty.

If the Starter does work fine and spins properly, sending the bendix out, then check the flywheel before reinstalling the starter. You may have shed some teeth, or something came loose.

After these checkups, if everything is working properly, then check the distributor when cranking the Starter, to see if it is spinning. You will need remove the Distributor cap to watch it. You can also, while the starter is off, turn the flywheel with a wrench, or screwdriver/bar, whatever you can use, and see if that turns the engine over at all. You may need remove a sparkplug to release the compression to do this.

If all this fails, then there is something inside the engine either broken, or disconnected. Check to make sure you are getting spark to the plugs.
