Hi, on your vehicle the valves are not adjustable after about 1990 they started using hydraulic lifters, so if you have top end engine rattle then the chances are these lifters will need replacing or worse case the cam lobes could be worn if this is the case then your going to need to do a top end rebuild.

to replace the hydraulic lifters your going to need to remove the cams so as you can get to the lifters under neath the cup they sit under so its quite a big job.

the older type valves were a lot easier as you could adjust them with screwdriver and measuring guages but they started using the new ones as they made less noise and lasted longer, but the downside to this was that you need to do more work to replace the lifters.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Volvo fl 10 valve clearance

The valve clearance specification for a Volvo FL10 truck depends on the specific engine model and year of manufacture. Generally, the valve clearance for the FL10 truck with a Volvo D10 engine should be checked and adjusted as follows: Remove the valve cover: Remove the valve cover to access the valves. Rotate the engine: Rotate the engine to the top dead center (TDC) position for the cylinder you want to adjust. Check the valve clearance: Use a feeler gauge to check the clearance between the valve stem and the rocker arm. The specification for the valve clearance should be listed in the engine service manual. Adjust the valve clearance: If the clearance is not within the specified range, adjust the clearance by loosening the lock nut on the rocker arm and turning the adjustment screw. Tighten the lock nut when the clearance is correct. Repeat for each cylinder: Repeat the above steps for each cylinder. Reinstall the valve cover: Once all the valve clearances have been checked and adjusted, reinstall the valve cover. It is recommended to refer to the engine service manual for specific instructions and specifications for your particular Volvo FL10 engine.

08 Civic EX, valves became noisy at60K, valves quiet after warmup. They will probably still be noisy after I adjust them. Would the cause be excessive wear on the valves stem ends and rockers?

If there were no wear, the valves wouldn't need adjusting. The reason for periodically adjusting the valves is to compensate for the wear that the valve train undergoes over the life of the engine. Be optimistic! Have confidence that adjusting the valves will reduce the noisy valves.

What is the clearance between the rocker arm and the valve spring in a GM 2.2L motor

there is no specification for what you want
the valve clearance is between the end of the rocker arm and the end if the valve stem
the stem end is proud of the spring retainer so if your rocker arm is touching the spring retainer , you have a big problem as for the procedure it is set out in the workshop manual but if you don't have a manual it can be done like this
you will need the firing order of the engine first
now adjust no 1 piston valves when the next piston to fire has the valves in the rock position
that is the exhaust valve just closing as the inlet is just opening a bit of movement of the crank makes either valve move up or down
adjust no 1 piston valves
now move on to the next piston to fire and adjust the valves that were rocking
follow that procedure until all the valves are adjusted
for example
on a 4 cylinder engine with a firing order of 1--3--4--2
bring up no 1 piston and adjust the valves when the valves on no 3 piston are rocking
next piston to fire is no 4 so adjust no 2 piston valves
next piston to fire is no 2 so adjust the valves when no 1 valves are rocking
the procedure is the same for engines with any number of cylinders

When the valves are adjusted on the de-compression stroke can they be re-adjusted or is the head now faulty?

valves should always be adjusted with the cylinder being adjusted at top dead center(tdc). if you can rotate the motor by hand you can adjust the valves with no damage having being done.

I need the required valve & inyector clearance on a M11 engine

Cummins M11

Intake valve clearance 0.010 inch
Exhaust valve clearance 0.024 inch

The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 and that is the order the valves should be adjusted started with first timing mark on main pulley adjust cylinder number 1 The valves and injector should be adjusted at the same time The crankshaft is then rotated 120 degrees to next timing mark and cylinder 5 is adjusted, the crank is rotated again 120 degrees to next timing mark and cylinder 3 is adjusted.then back to the first timing mark, cylinder 6 is adjusted, etc/

Adjusting nut on plunger should be adjusted to the point where you feel the plunger just reaches the bottom.of travel/bottoms out.

Overhead valves making noise like they need ajusting

Valve Lash ADJUSTMENT 1.6L Engines NOTE: Measure valve clearance with the engine cold.
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove the valve cover.
  3. Set the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke for the cylinder to be adjusted.
  4. Check the valve clearance. The valve clearance specifications are as follows:
    • Intake valves: 0.005-0.007 inches (0.13-0.17mm)
    • Exhaust valves: 0.005-0.007 inches (0.13-0.17mm)
  5. After adjustment, tighten the locknuts to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 Nm).
  6. Repeat for each valve to be adjusted.
1.8L, 2.0L and 2.5L Engines The 1.8L, 2.0L and 2.5L engines utilize automatic hydraulic lash adjusters to maintain proper valve lash at all times. Periodic valve lash inspection and adjustment is not necessary or possible. prev.gif next.gif
