Yes it would smell like gas if it was not sparking because its not burning any of the fuel off. now why you arent getting spark is either cus of the stator, cdi box, or the coil and wires.

Does it have spark to the plugs? Have you tested the fuel pressure? Is the timing belt broken? Have you checked compression?

My toyota camry 220sei does not start. battery fully charged, enough fuel. the engine swings but it does on and running. sometines I can smell petrol, however I can't see any petrol around the engine.

cranks but will not start, clear as day, (few are) and floods.
no year, stated. not that makes this so very hard,
220sei? what is that? are you trying to say XV20?
no engine stated, nor country.
so i spin the wheel if fortune and land, 1996, XV20
and USA< and 3.0 L 1MZ-FE V6 engine.

  1. fuses good, ? "tested"
  2. keyon CEL lamp in cluster glows, if not PCM has no power. or lamp bad, fix that.
  3. connect scan tool crank for 5seconds, oh my gosh the PCM knows what's bad.? 1987 to now at least, all cars. so it says cam, crank sensors. or spark is bad.? DTC errors??????
  4. did you check for spark on all 6 cylinders, (do that tuneup now?, long forgot for 10 years?)
  5. eg: i got spark but timing is off, cam drive slipped, is why. omg , I fail edto do my timing belt service, if car has VVT boom you bent all the valves, many for sure. or just one bank. non VVT this does not happen,,3LV6
  6. ok , i checked compression, all are over 150, I now have spark and it still floods. so i Pull the fuel pump relay. and clear the flood and try test fuel it runs great for 3 second, cool !
  7. i then diagnose flooding, causes. (leaking injectors or too high fuel pressure.) and more. lots ,more but ILL stop, as fueling tests are long and tedious. (can show all)

My Polo Classic 2004 1.6 is misfiring. There is a smell of petrol and the car is not accelerating rapidly.

Check carefully for fuel leak. If it starts well and then gets worse as it warms up, check coolant temp sensor. May be it just smells like fuel because it misses so badly fuel is not being burnt and floods tailpipe. Check spark at plugs with timing light to avoid sparks where fuel may be present. Weak or irratic spark can be coil/module, crank/cam sensor. Remove plugs to see what they look like or which is not firing.

Car not starting, oil in spark plugs. changed valve cover gasket and spark plug seals. still cant get the car to start. starter is turning engine turns over and getting spark. i can smell fuel coming from...

If you smell fuel in the exhaust the vehicle is flooding or there is no spark. If it is a carb engine, make sure that the choke is in and hold you foot flat on the pedal while trying to start, this will clear any flooding.

My 1997 GMC Sierra 5.0 Litter wont start and i changed the fuel pump regulator, what might be the problem?

engines need 3 things to start (petrol engine)
fuel, air and a spark,
as you have been working on your fuel system it is best to suspect this system first,
on engine turn over see if you can smell fuel at the exhaust.
if you smell fuel the fuel regulation mybe too high and the engine is flooding.
if you do not smell fuel, remove fuel line from engine and ensure fuel is getting to the engine,
(be careful not to let fuel spill this generates a fire risk)..
once fuel is getting to the engine, check your ignition system to ensure you have a good spark to ignite the fuel.
finally check your air filter is not blocked and that you have air getting to the engine.

I hope this was helpful.

Run out of petrol put more in went to start car just kicks over seem like petrol not getting to carb the car is a 1997 model 146 no smells like flooding

Are you sure you ran out of petrol? It might be that the petrol pump or something else had died. The only way to tell is to undo the fuel line from the carb and turn it over, check if it pumps fuel (have someone help you with this.) You might also find that you've got a blockage in your fuel filter, caused maybe by **** left floating at the top of the tank that was sucked in when you ran out of petrol. Check the filter first and see if it's OK, then check if fuel is flowing. Also, on a 97 Alfa, I'd imagine it was fuel injected though I could be wrong. If it is then you'll want to be more careful wit the fuel line.

Buy some starting fluid and spray some in the carb or air cleaner intake port, if the machine is flooding do not choke while using the starting fluid, make sure you do not have too much oil in the mowwer.
