My 2001 FLHT's fuel gage jiggles wildly up and down while riding along. It is the only guage acting erratically. what could be the problem and how do I fix?

The problem is caused by the fuel sloshing around in the tank and the fact that Harley does not use a "dampened" gauge. The sending unit is a float attached to a rod inside the fuel tank. As the float rises and lowers, it changes the resistance of a variable resistor in the tank. The resistance is read by the gauge and converted into a reading that approximates the level of fuel in the tank. The reason the gauge is not dampened could be any number of reasons. Either Harley wanted to use a cheap gauge or a dampened gauge might allow you to run out of fuel because it reads the level of the fuel too slowly. In small tanks like the ones on motorcycles, this could be a problem. I know of no way to remedy the problem without changing the gauge and sending unit.

Wild guess, usually a fuel pump relay causes erratic fuel delivery if it's not working right. Could also be a bad fuel pump. Are you sure you have fuel in the tank? A low tank would cause erratic behavior in the fuel delivery. There is a device called fuel pressure relief valve. It may be starting to fail, not maintaining sufficient fuel pressure for the fuel injectors. Sometimes fuel gages don't work right. Cold weather may contribute.

THERE SHOULD BE 3 WIRES, FROM PUMP/SENDER UNIT, 1 WIRE FOR PUMP POWER, 1 WIRE FOR GROUND, & 1 WIRE FOR FUEL GAGE, THE FUEL GAGE WIRE GOES DIRECTLY TO GAGE , INSPECT THIS WIRE , MAY CHANGE COLOR ON ITS WAY TO GAGE, WIRE MAY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED UNDER TRUCK, ALONG FRAME RAIL, OR HAS BECOME CORRODED, A BUMP IN THE WIRE INSULATION(CORROSION), ALSO, CHECK ALL GROUNDS, REPEAT, ALL GROUNDS TO FUEL PUMP CICUIT, EVEN IF THEY LOOK OK, THEY COULD BE BAD GROUNDS, YOU NEED GOOD GROUNDS TO COMPLETE ANY CIRCUIT !!! 2001 TRUCK, I'D QUESTION YOURS !!!!! Mercury Sable 1996 Fuel gauge erratic how to repair it and what piece to buy ?

i would most likely replace the sending unit in the tank,this is wat meters fuel level and transmits bak to guage. i would first tap on top of dash board wen guage acts up to see if there are any changes in its erratic action,if there is then ur problem would b a faulty guage or in that area,if not then its safe to go bak to tank area an replace sending unit... good luck
