To adjust the clutch on your FXE, loosen the lock nut on the cable adjuster on the left side of the seatpost of the frame. Turn the adjuster in as far as it will go.

Now, remove the derby cover and loosen the locknut on the clutch release pushrod adjuster in the center of the clutch assembly. Adjust the push rod release until the clutch release arm is as close to the starter as possible then back it up until it's just about an 1/8 to a 1/4" away from the starter. Lock the lock nut down and reinstall the derby cover.

Now, at the cable adjuster, adjust the adjuster out until you get about an 1/8" freeplay at the lever. This should get you a good release of the clutch.

The important thing is that you must have a bit of freeplay in the clutch lever. Otherwise, your throwout bearing will be against the pushrod constantly and will fail resulting you not being able to release the clutch. If this happens, you'll have to pull the clutch release cover off the right side of the transmission to replace the bearing. It's a little ***** thing about the size of nickle.

Good Luck
Steve

Page 6-4 from 79 fx harley davidson superglide manual got messed up. need info on clutch adjustment.

Loosen the cable adjustment that's on the right side of the bike just behind the starter solenoid. Turn the adjuster in a good bit. Remove the derby cover and loosen the lock nut in the center of the clutch assembly. Turn the adjusting screw inwards or outwards to adjust the position of the clutch release arm. Seems like 1979 was a transition year in which they changed the type of transmission that was used in the bike. The early models used the rotary top transmission and the late models used the rachet top (cow pie) transmission. If you have the rotary top transmission, adjust the center screw of the clutch until the gap between the starter and the release lever measures 3/8" to 5/8". If you have a ratchet top (cow pie) transmission, set the gap between the release lever and the small diameter section of the top of the shifting mechanism at 13/16". Once you get this set, go back to the cable adjuster and turn it outwards until you have about an 1/8" freeplay in the cable.

Good Luck
