The battery seems to be covered up by some fairings. What do I have to remove in order to expose the battery terminals so I can jump start the dead battery?
With the seat removed the battery can be seen snugged up against the back of the tank
the terminals are accessible at the back top of the battery if you look up under the plastics
have a care jumping so close to the tank
probably best to connect positive first then ground to frame well away from the battery/tank
I have a 2004 RT. You can get to the negative, but the positive is harder to get to and usually covered by a plastic protector. Suggest you hook your positive jumper cable to a screwdriver and use the screwdriver to contact the positive terminal. Use two screwdrivers if you can't reach either terminal. Just hold the screwdriver(s) on the terminal(s) while someone hits the starter button.
I have used the screwdriver approach myself, and it works. Difficult if you are alone thou.
So I have mounted a little part that makes this easier:
The later 1150's have a "jump start device" attached to the positive terminal, which makes it much easier to jump start. The parts are inexpensive, and your BMW dealer can order them. Then the next time you remove the left fairing and the battery you can attach that, and the you have a much easier solution next time your battery lets you down.
The parts are
Description BMW part number
Extension-angle piece for battery 61217671334
GROUND PIN M6X10 61137671354
PROTECTION CAP 61137672395
Flat washer 6,4 07119931050
Hope this helps.
