Yes but if those missing teeth happen to align with the starter teeth when you shut the car, when you go to start next time they're won't be gears touching each other so you might not be able to start the car. Also, the flywheel comes from the factory balanced so If you are missing teeth it will throw the wheel off balance and you could have vibrations throughout the vehicle as the engine revs higher than idol
if starter motor runs (hear it??) but doesn't turn engine , then it needs to be replaced also at same time , the gear it contacts with on flywheel edge ,needs to be visually inspected (easy with starter removed) for any missing or bent teeth , as a engine this old is bound to have some worn or missing teeth, if gear is missing teeth or are very worn (teeth looks like a shark fin with hook to them) then engine and transmission will need to be separated to be replace the gear , most shops will just remove engine to allow for this , but this isn't always nessacary
On top of your starter is a "solenoid", which does two jobs:
1. it's the starter relay,
and
2. it engages the pinion gear on the starter with the flywheel.
There is a "bendix spring" that retracts the gear when you stop cranking. The gear can get stuck on the shaft, and the starter will just spin....
Contact me directly at [email protected] I see that V-Twin does not offer the clutch basket but they do list the starter ring gear. I don't have the parts you need but I may can give you a place to call.
