Honda motor only runs with choke fully on.

Has fresh gas, flow to carb, muffler clean, and blew air through what looks like the main jet in carb, all clear

  • Anonymous May 03, 2010

    kel1guy,
My honda motors other jet does not have a slot in it so you can remove it,also the bottom float bowl screw does not have any holes on it.The float and everything checked out fine.Got to run without choke, but when you run it for awhile under load (using washer) it will stall out after about 1 min of constant use. Pump? Had to take this exact power washer back while under warranty, because it would not kick into high pressure and replace it with a new washer. Any suggestions?

    Kelly,
Lubed up the pump and the washer worked fine.Think I need to pay more attention to pump when I winterize it next year. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Lets back up and regroup on the carb cleaning.

Before you start.... if you have a digital camera take "close up" PICTURES of the linkages and springs attaching to the carb. If this is your first time you will be so glad you did. You can always delete them later if you don't need them. :)

Here is what you need to do:

1. Fuel selector off
2. Remove float bowl mounting screws and nut
3. Remove the BRASS Jet / Orifice in the very bottom of the venturi tube inside the pickup tube. (Flat blade screwdriver) Hold the Orifice up to the light. You should see a pinhole. If it is not clear clean the orifice but do not force anything through the hole.
4. Underneath the Orifice there is yet another BRASS tube that you need to remove. (Flat blade screwdriver) Make sure all of the holes in the tube are clear. The tube will be over 2 inches long. Clean it and reinstall it.
5. Reinstall the Orifice.
6. Using a catch fuel container turn on the fuel selector. Fuel should flow at a good rate. GENTLY lift the float assy level and make sure fuel flow shuts off. When you drop the float again fuel should flow.
If you do not have fuel flow at this point the needle and seat will need to be inspected. Fuel selector OFF.
(The following procedure is to be done only if there is no fuel flow with fuel selector on.)
a. Remove the silver float pivot pin retaining screw
b. Drop the Float down (The needle will come off with the float. NOTE the position)
c. Inspect the tapered rubber of the needle If should be pointed. If it is not pointed then the rubber tip is stuck inside the seat.
d. Clean the seat hole ONLY if obstructed. (Easily damaged)
e. FUEL Selector on then off fuel should rapidly flow through the needle seat.
f. Renistall Float and needle making sure to get the pivot / hinge pin installed correctly and reinstall the silver retaining screw.
g. Fuel selector ON. Raise and lower float checking for free movement with fuel flow when lowered and stopped when the float is raised level.

NOTE if fuel does NOT stop when float is level you will need to bend the float tab (tab up if level is too high or tab down if level is too low) where the needle attaches to the float assy until it does.

7. If there still is no fuel flow at this point remove the fuel hose from the carb and check fuel flow. If no flow check that gas tank exit hole, fuel filter (if installed) and the selector valve assy for obstructions.

Reassemble connections.

FUEL FLOW IS GOOD

Step 8 is VERY important"

8. BEFORE you install the float bowl inspect the bowl nut. There are 2 holes in the side of the nut where it screws in to the bottom of the carb that must be clear.

9. Install Float bowl mounting screws and nut. Check for leaks.

10. Test engine.

That should do it.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Kelly

Final note... if it does NOT start after this there are other problems we can discuss. i.e compression and spark "how to."

Just doing a follow up. Were you able to resolve the problem with your pressure washer?

If you need more help just ask.

Hi. Do you know the exact engine model number on this unit?

I do not think it is the pump UNLESS you are noting a substantial increase in pressure (noted by the force felt in the gun) over that same minute.

I need to know if it passed this test? (Float bowl is removed)

    6. Using a catch fuel container turn on the fuel selector. Fuel should flow at a good rate. GENTLY lift the float assy level and make sure fuel flow shuts off. When you drop the float again fuel should flow.

(It should pretty much fill a spray can lid after 30 seconds or so.)

If you do not have fuel flow at this point the needle and seat will need to be inspected. Fuel selector OFF.

I think we are still dealing with a fuel starvation issue. Having the engine model number we can sort this out and SOON.

My apologies... I just read that you said the float checks were fine.

If the float checks were fine... then it is time to break out the carb cleaner and start spraying. What my concern is that is sure does seem that the float bowl is full when you start it and is vacated after about a minute of under load use.

If there is a fuel manifold on the side of the carb remove the manifold nut and inside of the maifold there is a white mini-screen / filter that can and does clog. It is like a 1/ 4 in high ring that sits inside of the manifold itself. (If installed)

The only other things that come to mind are an in line filter bowl just off the tank or an actual fuel filter that is restricted.... We still have not ruled out a restriction in the gas tank outlet.

Time for me to stop babbling and wait for your response.

Thanks for the update. The pump was doing a trick we call "dead heading!"

It must have been some pretty awesome pressure :) Glad your back in the power washing mode.

When I move the choke to run the motor dies....even after 30 minutes of running.

No, but it sounds if the carb needs to be cleaned! Fresh fuel helps too. Check the spark plug and check the breather filter. Also you can crank the engine with the breather filter off and try to move the choke to run then. If it runs with the filter off then there is your problem! 1 question, has anyone try to work on it or adjust the carb in any way?

Murray mower starts with choke but dies

most likely your main jet in the carb is clogged, water in fuel, or a plugged fuel line, filter, or plugged in the tank where the fuel line connects. it is common to have a plug where the fuel line exits the fuel tank if there is a 90 degree turn in the fitting, debris may build up in the 90 degree area. check by replacing old fuel with new, then pull fuel line from carb and fuel should flow freely, look for a blocked fuel line if it does not flow. it it does flow, pinch off fuel line then remove the float bowl to drain remaining gas and give acess to the main jet. the main jet is located in the side or bottom of the lowest protruding area into the float bowl. run a thin wire like a guitar string thru the small jet hole to unplug, then squirt a little wd-40 thru jet hole to visually check flow. next, unpinch fuel line and fuel should flow from carb into float bowl area. then check to make sure the fuel stops flowing when the float is gently lifted to the top of its travel. if problem in this area, remove float pin, float, and needle valve and check for blockage in the needle valve seat. clean out with wd-40 and reassemble, add fresh gas and give it a try!

2004 300EX honda wont run without choke on.Cleaned carb bowl and fuel tank but still as soon as choke is taken off it stalls. It also back fires through the exhaust.

Hi, most probably you must clean the main jet on your carburator . When you use choke you are inceasing the petrol ratio in the fuel mix by reduciing air ; and you need that because the main jet does not alow petrol to flow
good luck

Only runs with full choke, I bought the bike last week and the float needle was stuck and I think it had bad gas. so I changed the gas, cleaned the carb, reset the float needle. I also set the main slide...

Hi mate reverse the needle clip position back to factory setting this issue is pilot circuit for sure - If you have cleaned carbi you need to replace or clean the pilot jet and compress air clean the hole where the pilot jet came out of to clear the circuit. Running only with choke on is classic symptom of block pilot circuit...
Also check you fuel air mix screw this may have been altered trying to correct this issue it should be 1.5 - 2.5 turns out from fully closed..
all the change of needle position clip is doing is allowing your bike to run off the main jet (not good)
and reason for running with choke on is it is changes air fuel mix with choke on compensating for lack of fuel from the pilot jet blockage

Mine will not start without dowsing the air cleaner with a little gas... then it wont stay running for more than 5 to 10 sec.. i replaced the plug, checked it for spark... there was plenty of spark....

If you are putting fuel on to th fillter and it fires it sounds like the choke is not working right. Take of the air fillter and look to see if the butterfly is fully shut when pulled on. If it is a primmer pump look in to see if there is any fuel comming up when pumped if they are both working then try putting fuel into the plug hole and see if it fires if it does then it is a fuel problemTake off the carb again know you said it is clean but remove the main jet valve in the centre of the carb and clean it every hole blew out and 100% spot less rebuild carb and refit to mower hopefully that should short you outl davidson lawn mower tech

I have a Coleman 1850 that only seems to run smooth when the choke is set at half way. When I fully open the choke the engine revs up and down and seems to want to stall.

A fuel starvation problem.
Pull the fuel line off the carb..........the flow should be strong from the tank.
If not check for a blocked filter or fuel switch not allowing full flow.
If you do have a good fuel flow.......the restriction is in the carb.......a good cleaning will be next.
Usually it is the main jet that is semi clogged from storing the engine with out shutting off the fuel and running the carb dry.
After cleaning make sure all fuel in the tank is fresh.

Only stays cranked on full choke.

your carb. is gummed up. Get some carbeurator cleaner spray and spray it into the air intake as it is running until it clears up. if it wont clear up, you will have to have the carb rebuilt.

Starts on choke but dies when moved off choke

If it will start on choke and die when choke is taken off...the carb needs to be taken off and cleaned. The main jet in the carb is probably clogged.
