2003 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L - RPMs Surge & Drop Out - Stalls In Idle

Hello,

My Chevy cavalier is having issues in idle. When we turn the car on, the RPMs go up and down...it revs up to 3000 RPM and then stabilizes at 1000 RPM. Sometimes it won't hold and will drop out.

When we drive, the car will sometimes shut off when in idle. It isn't just when we are stopping. Even at high speeds, the car will shut off if put into idle. Sometimes it will turn back on easily but other times it is a struggle.

We also noticed that if we put the AC on, the extra load will keep the car from dropping out.

We already replaced the fuel pump (it failed at 60,000 miles).

Any suggestions? Thank you.

Thanks for responding! Could you please explain though? I thought the point of the intake manifold was to draw in air.

Hello! As long as the oil pressure does not drop below 10-15 lbs at idle and iccreases with rpm/s I would not worry...Change to a higher range viscosity oil; 10W30 in the summer and 10W40 in the winter and you should not have a problem...Guru...saailer

I need to know where the idle adjust screw is on a 2003 chevy cavalier 2.2 eco tech engine

If you feel you have to adjust the idle then there is another problem with vehicle. It is all set at factory and computer controlled. What type of issue are you actually having?

My 2000 Cavalier runs great until I turn on the air or heat (only at idle) If I turn either on at idle within seconds the RPMs jump back and forth between 500 and 1200 and I have major power loss at take...

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

If that's the case then the problem will be on the MAF (mass air flow) sensor. If the MAF is faulty the car tends to loose power and erratic idle may occur. One good reason why you are having this issues. I strongly suggest that you have it replaced to resolve the problem.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

When my 2005 chevy cavelier is idling (at stop lights, sitting in park, etc) where should the rpms be? I have a friend saying my rpms are too low when idling. Right now they are between 0 and 1. Thanks

Idle in park: 800-1100RPM is acceptable.
In drive: about 700RPM
Your idle speed is actually controlled by the idle air control motor also called the IAC. There isn't any idle adjustment you can manually set as the motor is fuel injected and EEC controls air and fuel mixture at idle.

Describe your 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier 'I have a 2003 chevy cavalier. The car stalls each time i stop! When i start it each time the car stays at an idle!what would cause that? thanks'. Problem

sounds like a leak in the brake booster, but i'm not sure that car had one. if you have a larger booster canister between your firewall and master cylinder, remove and replace the bushings and hose that come from the booster and see if that solves your problem. if it doesn't, you may have a bad brake booster causing the vaccuum leak that is killing your car.
