Question about 2002 Suzuki VL 1500 Intruder LC
My 2004 Suzuki VL1500 Intruder LC Motorcycle has a backfire problem, usually when decelerating, the back fire is very loud to the point of ear shattering and the engine usually stalls. I had the carbs cleaned, adjusted and sychronized, problem still exists, the dealers don't know what is wrong [I've tried 3 dealers] and is unable to duplicate the problem, any suggestions???
If they cant duplicate it your good.Usualy with backfiring i would make sure to eliminate any exhaust leaks. The dealer is inexperienced at solving compound problems,(sorry) not picking a fight, but sometimes cleaning is not goog enough,I went through this with a 1400 Intruder.several attempts were needed to get the two carbs level on the same line with each other.so the floats would work properly together, then set fuel flow and the air flow through the ventouri in the carbs. Also i had to make these adjustments while level (not on side stand) The floats were very sencitve to needle valve to seat adjustment(bent to open or close some of the flow)

Bacfire on decel is usually an exhaust leak. CHeck the donut gaskets where the exhaust manifold leaves the engine. The flanges on the VL 1500 are fairly thin and when these gaskets leak, folks will usually just crank down on the nuts to the flanges that hold the exhaust manifolds in place. After the engine heats up, it causes the flanges to bend a little and then when it cools, they loosen up and a leak develops. So, you crank down on the nuts, the flanges bend, etc etc. Pretty soon you look at the flanges and they are bent and touching the heads so no more adjustment and the leak continues. Check yours, mine has done it. One way might fix it is to take off the flanges, which will usually break the manifold studs. Replace the studs and shim the flanges with stainless steel washers, give them something to tighten down onto. Might work, lots of work and if you break a manifold stud, it is a real mechanical experience to get it out. Don't worry tho, you'll need the practice cause there are 4 studs. Good luck and God bless ya.

Don't know if the will help, but i got my 02 vl 1500 1 1/2 yrs. ago it done the same backfired stalled on decelleration, then had hard time restarting, had to wait, replaced battery, new from Suzuki dealership, started every time after that never had that happen again, last spring had my 5000k tuneup from dealership, pricey about $250 included trickle charge, keep it on it all the time. Starts everytime even past winter at below 30 degrees.
