Oil in my air filter box

I noticed my bike was giving off smoke so after some investigation I found oil I'm my airfilter and box. The box had a small crack in it maybe caused by me over tightening, would this crack be the cause for oil though? Should I buy a new airfilter box or look for another fault?

Is the crack in the box not a problem? I thought th smoke would be caused by oil going straight into my carbs? It must be something I've done as I only took it off through the week. Thanks for your help

Took apart radiator for the oil, changed
oil an filter. Started back up and it's smoking still. The eye glass for my oil is really steamed up quick. Took the air filter box off whilst running it and it looks like the oil is getting thrown back up the engine and cylinders? Someone has mentioned head gasket is this easy to change? If not piston rings which sounds major

This is just blow by from the crankcase breather system..the trapped oil in the box should be drawn back into the fuel air mixture to be reburned..its a smog pollution control design thingy..there is probably a hose attached to the bottom section of the air box...follow that hose to make sure that it didn't fall off from the top of the valve cover area..i think thats were it hooks up..at least thats where it is on my 87 cbr...i occasionally see a little oil in the box but nothing to worry about. if the hose is off its probably leaking down onto the exhuast pipes and thats the smoke you see. please let me know im curious.
thanks

Just as long as the crack isnt big enough to allow a lot of debris to get sucked into the carbs i wouldnt worry to much. You could always put a piece of tape over it on the outside of the box but definately dont put anything on the inside to repair this.

did you get a chance to have a look at your oil before you changed it? did it look milky brown or any other color than black..because if it did then you probably do have a blown gasket. How does the exhaust look, is it smoking white? Thats not a good sign. changing the head gasket would be easier than the piston rings, but you should have the compression checked, i believe this would tell you the condition of the rings. these jobs are both pretty tricky and if your not set up to do this kind of work you should take it to a shop.
    good luck.

2001 vl 1500 intruder lc started smoking around the engine and drips a little oil

gday there kenneth this sounds like the seller before was trying to stop the engine from smoking ,this is a old trick you do not put much oil in to the motor so the compression when it pushes past the worn rings pressurerises the engine cases and pushes oil out of the breather hole into the airbox this is why when you filled it and put the hose back to the air filter it was smoking .best thing to do is check your spark plugs and see if there oiled up if they are see if you have a mate with a engine compression gauge and check the compression this will more than likely be it .if not take it too your dealer and let him do the test for you .hope this helps cheers

My harley has a small leak coming from the air filter, the mechanic at the harley dealership told me it was the air filter. So i bought a new filter put it on and checked the oil level, with the bike...

Regrettably, a small oil leak from the air cleaner assembly is "normal". This is because the EPA requires all crankcase emissions to be routed to the intake system so that it can be burned in the engine. The result is that oil mist in the crankcase vented condenses in the air cleaner and eventually drips out.

The crankcase vent for your Sporty is in the heads. If you noticed, there are two large bolts that are hollow holding the air filter backing plate on. The crankcase vents into the air cleaner assembly through these two bolts. There is an "unbrella valve" in the rocker box center section that allows the air to flow one way but not the other. There are baffles in this area to keep the oil mist to a minimum but still there is some in the air coming out of the engine.

There are a few kits available on the aftermarket for re-routing this crankcase vent. You can direct the exit anywhere you wish using one of these kits. Most people just route the hose down and exit it under the bike just in front of the rear wheel.

When adding oil to your bike, only add the oil when the engine is hot. On your dipstick, you have two marks. The upper mark represents "FULL HOT" while the lower mark represents 'FULL COLD", Do not overfill. Check the level with the bike on the side stand.

Good Luck

Oil is leaking out of my air filter and grey smoke is comming from exhaust

the grey smoke is more than likely the air filter being blocked by the oil, it also sounds like unburnt fuel, check your choke ect to see if its seating properly, give the air filter a clean, then see if any more grey smoke appears (it'll start again when oil clogs it again). also check the exhaust system for a blockage e.g. worn/old gasket ect. change the oil check the colour make sure no gaskets have gone. also put the exact amount in as stated in owners manual (too much oil=too much pressure and can seep through oil ring on piston and leak into air box and make your bike run rubbish. hope this helps, it might not but worth a try.

Way too much oil, how do I fix?

If the problem was just overfill, the smoke should clear up after running it for awhile. You may want to replace air filter or clean if possible.

I changed my oil and filter now oil is leaking

you put to much oil in. drain some off. some oil in recirculated through breather hose's going to the air filter. If u over fill more goes in then can be handled and it drips out of airfilter and onto bike. dont put in a full 3 qts just 2.6

On S50 Suzuki Motocycle I have an oil drip from a rubber tube that looks like it comes from up near the air cleaner and exits below the bike. Any ideas before I start taking the seat, tank, etc. off?

The air cleaner(filter) also filters crankcase blowby . Oil accumulates in filter box and drains. The draining is to prevent oil from being drawn into intake an should be addressed by servicing air filter and cleaning out the box. Rapid and excess oil in filter is a n indicator that blowby is considerable. Hardrabbit starts and sudden accelerations play a big part in ring wear and blowby. I've noticed the use of filter sponge placed, not stuffedm in crankcase vent hosebef ore filter housing will separate oil from fumes before they get to airfilter and oil will drain right back into engine instead of collecting in air box. Some crankcase vents are baffled and have a seperation medium factory installed at the enngine end if vent hose. Do not plug the drain or crankcase vent hose. major leaks will sevelope. Over reving will also cause greater oil misting that is carried out the vent with the air. Good luck - note! rapid throttling affects fuel burning eficciency and tends to break down needed cykinder wall lubtication, hastening ring wear. have fun, be safe.

Oil in my air filter

Oil in the air filter could mean tht the piston rings are weak thus throwing oil from the breather to the airfilter via the breather pipe.
Some filters do require a little oil like thK & N ones maybe in your bike it was over filled if at all.
You can run the engine with out the air fliter and see if theres smoke coming out of the breather pipe, if it does thn you will have to replace the piston rings or more over rebore the block and replace the piston kit.

Hope this helps !
