1980 Yamaha XS 650 special not charging

I have a 1980 XS 650 special. It does not seem to be charging. My DC voltmeter shows about 6 volts on a dead connected battery when I rev the engine. The brushes were worn almost to the line so I replaced them, the stator windings look ok as well. What other parts can I test or replace cheap?

Check the rotor magnet to see if the windings are shorted to the base use an ohm meter to check for grounding to the base.

Need to know how to sink my carbs and adjust them on a 1980 yamaha xs 650

Do you have a synchronizing tool? If not, you'll need one, either homemade or store bought. All what synching the carbs means is that they are both pulling in the same amount of gas and air based on manifold vacuum pressure.

1980 yamaha xs400g special

The crank case should be tightend in a criss cross pattern. Top,bottom, side, side in a circle. The bigger bolts torque to 25 lbs, the smaller ones 10 lbs. I would do the big ones with a torque wrench and the smaller ones by hand. Chaz Moto DC

Battery life doesnt last for more than 20 miles

If it's after you charge it fully, and then start and ride the bike, either the bike is pulling way too much power, or you just need a new battery for the bike.
