Hello I have a 1996 Suzuki DR-200 and recently put
Hello I have a 1996 Suzuki DR-200 that does not want to start when cold, choke or not. I recently put a jet kit in it, hoping that this would help a lean situation. I also took off the carbon canister (California model). I followed the jet kit installation instructions and all went well. The bike runs great when warmed up, but is very hard/impossible to start when cold... In the cold morning, it will run down a fully charged battery no matter if the choke is used or not. If you wait until the sun warms it up, it will start but is very resistant to take any throttle for several seconds... it will just barely idle then gradually take slight amounts of throttle and then be fine. Once warm, it starts fine, and like I said - it seems to run very well. The choke IS working since once it gets running, it will run quite rich with the choke on, so better to turn it off. My guess is that it is lean to the point of not running when its cold... Looking at the spark plug between bouts of starting attempts seems to confirm this lean condition (100% dry), but nothing I do with the choke helps. Any ideas where to look? Thank you!

G'day mate the 1st thing i would go for is float level then compresion if it does have the **** it wont take the fuel in , rules are if it has **** ( induction ) Squeeze (compression) Bang ( spark) and Blow (free exhaust) then it should go, if it was running to lean there is good chance it has a burnt exhaust valve which will greatly drop the compression/induction, also check the valve clearence. hope this helps

Are you giving it any throttle when you try to start it, yu shouldnt, keep throttel completely closed when using hte choke or you will flood the engine
I would scour Craigslist, Offer Up, 5 Mile, EBay, Amazon

First of all, check, if the oil is now way fuller than before - if you left the petcock on PRI the gearbox is now full with a gaz-oil-mix! You need an oilchange. (and check the airfliter of excess gaz, too) Recharge the battery. Now, if that's ok, (petcock always on ON), pull out the choke and start the motor. 2 month is not very long, should be fine, especially when you put Sta-Bil in the gaz tank before winter.

Replace all fluids including any hydraulic fluids. Fit new spark plugs and strip down carburettor cleaning the jets especially the main jet. If corroded at all, replace the corroded jets.
Pretty common issue with dirt bikes. Most likely the carb just needs a good cleaning. I clean mine every spring before even firing them up for the first time. It's a 20 minute job. Also make sure you are using fresh fuel. If there was old gas in the tank from when you put it away, it may have absorbed moisture so it requres more gas to actually idle (choke on). Do not just dump some moisture chemical like "Heat" in it. Drain the gas and put fresh stuff in it.
Make sure you are using the choke - which is actually not a choke, but a fuel enrichment circuit in the carburetor. The lever is located down on the carburetor. Also, you can try draining the fuel from the carburetor float bowl. Sometimes, just enough water will collect in there to make it difficult to start when cold.
Get some carb cleaner. Remove and clean the Nozzle, choke and main jet. Remove the pilot jet and air jet but count the number of turns to remove each one and put them back the same number of turns. Don't mess with the needle or clip or the pilot screw and plug at this time. Clean the carb thoroughly. Don't get carb cleaner on the diaphragm. If able, submerge the carb in cleaner overnight. still trying? check the tank for rust or debris inside. take tank off bike remove pump and get a good look in there. mine rusted a little and got all blocked up
It depends on the tempature, if its pretty chilly out yeah. Try easing the choke in slowly, and when it will idle at about half choke go aheand and take off but run the bike easy for a few minutes then close the choke.
