Motorcycle, BMW F650 GS engine or electrical cutout / cutoff??.

Rode last year with no errors, put it away for the winter in november, now I can start it, ride for like 2 km then it cuts out and I have to pull it back home. Later starts fine again, and same thing happens. Very unreliable :-( Any ideas? Battery is new and fully charged. I have workshop manual, but no faultfinding guide or troubleshooter. Might this be the sparkplug (faulty when it gets hot or something??). Hope to hear some ideas from you guys out there :-)

Hi Dave, Thanks for the fast response!! No I think she just put it in the garage over winter - But how come that it can start up again later on and then AGAIN lose power? It'll run for a few km's and go dead. Several times on the same day. If it was the carb wouldn't it just be plain dead? Can it be water somewhere carb/tank)? I was thinking that if the sparkplug had a crack it would maybe work fine (cold) but once it got hot the crack (or whatever) would open up and thus malfunction. But you think it's in the carb. I'll tell her. But she's had different bikes for like 15 years and never emptied anything. Only unplugged the battery.

If your spark plug is the culprit, it will eihter not run or run badly but you won't do any harm by replacing it. Did you drain the carb when you laid it up. If not the fuel evaporates and coats the inside of the carb with a varnish. It is good that you can ride it, but the first thing I would look at is the carb, strip it and clean it, blow out the jets and see if it makes a difference. As irritating as it is, I don't think the problem is a sinister one.

Might be the plug. It is only a couple of bucks to replace it but why would the plug crack over winter? Have you had the cdi unit checked? I doubt if it is water in the fuel because if it is it would rund badly all the time.
