I'm have troubles with the starter, i think, in my

I'm having troubles with my 2001 mercury cougar... it has a new battery, starts ok usually, but sometimes won't turn over without several tries. i'm not sure if it's the starter, or the censor thing where to key goes in. but sometimes I gotta try startin it 5 times or so before it'll try to turn over. i know it's not an engine or battery problem. it's like a short or something maybe. suggestions would be great.

New lock cylinder still won't start it.

I'd have to check wiring circuits to your starter motor. There are usually two hot circuits at the starter, one is battery voltage, hot all the time. The other circuit usually goes hot with key in the crank position. use a test light to check for voltage. Any testing at the starter make sure tranny is in park or neutral and the parking brake is set.

There could be other issues, security system-- neutral or clutch switch depending on your tranny--wiring circuit problem, somewhere? Maybe a starter issue? The engine isn't froze-up, is it?

Mercury cougar wont start

My first suspicion is the battery connections may be lose and also the battery may now be run down. If you take the terminal connections off and clean them and the terminal posts so that they are shiny clean and charge the battery you can try again. If the car starts, that was the problem. If it doesn't, then look for the starter solenoid and lose connections there and also look toward the starter next. A tech with a volt meter can run independent checks and narrow it down further but having good connections and a charged battery are necessary to get started with the other tests.

Won't start has loud clicking noise

Check battery connections at battery and battery also. If OK your problem may be your starter.

1999 mercury cougar 2.5l stater removal

Two things could be one the ground on the starter itself bad, aslo check the small wire that pushes on the starter. The most likley reason is the starter has failed if the battery tests ok.

2001 Mercury Cougar, won't turn over

This will sound stupid but check to make sure all the bulbs, yes I said bulbs, as in brake and turn signals are the correct bulb. No kidding. I fought a problem like this in my shop for a week on a mustang. It had a wrong brake light bulb. Just a idea. See if it will start by jumping the 2 posts on the starter solenoid under the hood on the inner fender. It has two battery cables going to it. use 2 heavy screw drivers to do this. Do not tough the metal of teh screw drivers. The solenoid could also be bad.

2001 mercury cougar startor problems

the best advice i can give you is to purchase a haynes repair manual at your local auto store. it'll give you step by step instructions. $18 they are usually hard to get at, but there are 2 bolts holding the starter in place, after removing the wires, just remove bolts and wiggle out. no special tools required. make sure to disconnect battery first. good luck
