I think you mean that the clutch has a broken cable and it is constantly engaged. The clutch dis-engages from the gear box when the clutch lever is pulled in. The push lever axle (I think this is what you are calling the main shaft) sits in a hole on the side cover. The gear on the axle engages the push rod and the push rod separates the clutch plates by pushing on the pressure plate to dis -engage the transmission. If the axle shaft is loose, check the lock bolt. Also check the cover plate. Is the casing cracked or broken at the mounting point?

If you are calling the push rod "the main shaft", then some movement is normal when the clutch is engaged as would happen with a broken cable. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

2002 mini one wont go in gear whilst engine running, clutch seems perfect never slipped low bite, brutal force required to try engage and still wont go in

this indicates that the clutch plate is not properly disengaged with he foot on the pedal
If it is hydraulic I would be checking for air in the system of faulty master cylinder
More costly problems may be oil grease on the clutch linings causing it to stick or drag, spigot bearing in the rear of the crank shaft seizing up, rust or dry grease and dust on the splines of the input shaft preventing the clutch plate from moving
All or any of these require a box removal to fix
if clutch is cable operated then the cable may be failing and stretched resulting in the clutch not disengaging properly

85 toyota pickup clutch wont engage

The gear box should be okay. Check the clutch-watch if the clutch fork on the bell housing moves when someone presses the clutch. If it doesn't move, the cable needs adjusting, or if hydraulic clutch diagnose the clutch master and slave cylinders. Either one should cause the clutch fork to move and engage the clutch.

My clutch wont engage.

you need to take the clutch cover off and inside you will find a small shaft going up to your clutch lever. If that lever is broken you will have to replace that shaft. If the clutch shaft checks out check your cable that could be broken. If it is then replace and adjust and you are good to go. Good luck on the bike

'02 alero 5 spd wont engage gear

My first question is - have you had the trans filled with fluid ?
If the fluid level is now normal, and you can't shift the gears, you may have damaged the main shaft inside the trans.

PrEngine is running, gearbox linkage can be seen moving looking down from engine - when driver puts lever into gear, gearbox not engaging - with or without clutch applied. Possible areas which could...

Unfortunately the problem will need investigating. There must be a problem with the flywheel / clutch assembly or the gearbox itself. The fact that you can move the gear linkage indicates that there is no drive in the gearbox ( ie not turning). The only items that effect this are the clutch / flywheel assembly or the primary shaft in the gearbox.
The gearbox will have to be removed and the above checked.
