New bolts are recommended, but the following applies.

For 3.8-liter engines manufactured from 1994 until 1995, the cylinder head requires multiple steps in a helical sequence to bolt properly: first to 15 foot-lbs. of torque, then to 29 foot-lbs., and finally to 37 foot-lbs.. Loosen the long bolts to between 29 and 37 foot-lbs. of torque and the short bolts to between 7 and 15 foot-lbs. of torque. Then, tighten each bolt an additional 90 degrees. The last two steps--the loosening and then the 90 degree tightening--should both be performed on each bolt before moving to the next bolt.

The torque settings for the cylinder head on a 2003 Ford Ranger 2.5 turbo diesel WLT engine are as follows:

• Main cap bolts: 70 Nm (52 ft-lbs)
• Head bolts: 65 Nm (48 ft-lbs)
• Rocker arm shaft nuts: 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)

It is important to note that these torque values are for the cylinder head bolts and main cap bolts only. Other fasteners on the engine, such as the oil pan bolts, may have different torque requirements.

Cylinder head bolt torque sequence-2.0L and 2.3L engines

Apply engine oil to the bolt threads and tighten the cylinder head bolts, in sequence, using the following 6 Steps:

• Step 1: 38.5 ft. lbs. (53 Nm)
  
• Step 2: 61 ft. lbs. (84 Nm)
  
• Step 3: Loosen all of the cylinder head bolts
  
• Step 4: 38.5 ft. lbs. (53 Nm)
  
• Step 5: 76 ft. lbs. (105 Nm)
  
• Step 6: Bolt M6 (bottom left of cylinder head) - 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm)

Do not torque your starter with a torque ratchet,You will break bolts,,,,It requires inch lbs.,,,not foot lbs,,,use a good ratchet and tighten the bolts.

Tighten the cylinder head bolts 1 - 8 in the sequence shown in Cylinder Head Bolts Location and Tightening Sequence Using the 4 step torque turn method, tighten according to the following values:
Step 1: Bolts 1 - 8 to 61 N·m (45 ft. lbs.)
Step 2: Bolts 1 - 8 to 88 N·m (65 ft. lbs.)
Step 3: Bolts 1 - 8 (again) to 88 N·m (65 ft. lbs.)
Step 4: Bolts 1 - 8 turn an additional 1/4 Turn. (Do not use a torque wrench for this step.)
NOTE: Bolt torque after 1/4 turn should be over 122 N·m (90 ft. lbs.) If not, replace the bolt.

Tighten head bolt number 9 Cylinder Head Bolts Location and Tightening Sequence to 33 N·m (25 ft. lbs.) after head bolts 1 - 8 have been tighten to specifications.

Coat threads of left hand front bolt with sealant: 1st - step; - 22 ft./lbs. 2nd - step; - 45 ft./lbs. 3rd - step, all bolts except L.H. front bolt; - 110 ft./lbs. 4th - step, L.H. front bolt; - 100 ft./lbs.

The 8mm head bolts are torqued at 19 - 21 ft/lbs.
any smaller 6mm bolts are torqued to only 6 ft/lbs
like those on the lower cylinder.
