Replaced selenoid, tested battery, still won't start?
I have an 01 Vulcan 800. Selenoid just clicks so I replaced it. Same results. Had battery tested and it's ok. Check fuses and no problems. Where do I go next?
if it clicks fast then it still isn't getting enough power, if it clicks once then is it engaging with the drive or just flicking out and not engaging. Have you bench tested the unit or tried putting voltage directly to it?if it clicks fast then it still isn't getting enough power, if it clicks once then is it engaging with the drive or just flicking out and not engaging. Your motor might be hydro locked with gas if the bike has sat for a long time. Pull the spark plugs and try to start it. PUT RAGS OVER THE SPARK PLUG HOLES, disconnect the plugs from the wires. Chaz Moto DC

Sounds like you need a new starter. Did you check it out before you replaced the alternator and battery?
Some vehicles have a seperate selenoid on the firewall that engages when you turn to switch to start the engine. Others have the selenoid mounted to the starter. I
I would first bypass the selenoid valve and provide power directly to the starter motor. If it starts then it's the selenoid. If it doesn't then it's the starter motor - may have a flat spot in the windings or possibly burned but not shorted windings in the motor.
It sounds like you need a new battery. A bad battery will cause the starter to drag, and when it drains more, the solenoid will only click. Replace the battery and you should be running like new again.
Based on your description, the starter selenoid is not getting enough juice (current) to pull up solidly. So, causes are:
1. Low battery voltage
2. bad connection of battery+ at the battery or at the selenoid terminal.
3. bad ground connection between the starter selenoid and the truck chassis.
If you want to bypass the selenoid, you can place a jumper cable on the "FAR" side of the selenoid (the side that feeds the starter). Then momentarily touch the other end of the jumper to the battery + terminal.
If the starter cranks, then you have confirmed the selenoid as problematic. Remove it and either replace it or disassemble and clean it.
Test before you replace! Check the ground cable. Make sure it is clean and tight. Check all connections for the same. I have to assume that you made sure the new battery was charged...Check all of your safety switches. Check the connection to the starter. Good luuck...Lee
its either a bad or drained battery or the starter selenoid. check your battery voltage using a tester or put it on a charger, if that doesnt solve your problem you should look at your starter selenoid
