Question about 1988 kawasaki ZX 10

1989 zx10 transmission

I'm probably going to purchase a zx10, with 64k. The tranny has a clunky noise when shifting, that has me concerned. Being that it's an 89, is that something they all had, or is it a real concern. It's not like a Harley clunk noise, but, it's still there regardless. Any input would be great.

I have a 99 ZRX1100 and mine makes clunky noises and its only in certain gears, first being the worst. I have also heard Suzuki Bandit make even louder clunking sounds thru most of the gears. I know older kaws are notorious for transmission problems. My buddy had a 89 zx7 and it was spotless and he rode it hard, but he destroyed the tranny on it. I have also heard of 2nd gear going out on these bikes around these years. I am going to look at a 90 ZX10 today. Can't pass up the deal. Good luck.

Did it do it under hard acceleration? or just a normal take off. I have heard of engine mounts or tranny mount bushings getting old (not mileage old but just aging) causing a thump or clunking sound in between shifting. What happens is the tranny actually hits the undercarriage of the vehicle during high torque situations such as shifting gears. I have also seen the mount retaining nut back off of the mounts and the only thing holding everything in place is gravity. Another possibility is drive shaft u-joint problems, but if it were it would probably be making the noise more often. I dont think there is actually anything wrong with the transmission itself as usually when they go bad they dont magically get better. Hope this helps. Good luck!

This transmission was a problematic transmission for Ford. The problem is a shift solenoid and or another valve malfunction in the valve body. The only way you are going to solve the problem is to place some line pressure gages on the ports that allow the taps to do so. This will tell you what is going on as far as pressures are concerned. I have rebuilt many of these transmissions. If you trailer tow a lot and the tranny has high mileage on it then it is probably had it. They are not good for many miles if you put them into hard service. Like I said a very problematic transmission. Sorry I can't help more, but I would have to have the tranny to check the options. If you take it to a tranny shop they will more than likely replace it with a rebuilt unit. Be prepared to shell out around $3800 dollars for the tranny.

Hoses about every 6 years, Belts every 30k And if its that clean, Drive it and make sure it shifts out ok warm and hot, Get it up to 50-60 mph with all sounds off and listen for a whine even a slight wine, If none heard id say buy it, The whine i spoke of is rear diff noise by the way.

1989? When was the last time the Transmission was drained and new Transmission Fluid (oil) put in?
This Fluid (oil) loses viscosity and get particles in it causing additional loss in viscosity. I would go to even having the transmission drained and FLUSHED (cleaned) and new Fluid (oil) put in. Recheck the operation.
Boyles and Charles Laws are applicable here: (P*V)/T. Heat causes the Fluid to Heat and Expand (in molecules) but because of the limited sealed volume (transmission case) this increases Pressure allowing the smoother shifting and placement into gears.
Change the Transmission Fluid (oil) and have the Transmission Flushed (cleaning the insides) and your problem should go away.
Let me know if this helped, or if you have any additional information or questions. Feel free to contact me at FixYa.com!

My 99 silverado shifts hard from first to second gear. Rest of gears aren't as hard but kind of clunky. Doesn't slip or anything like that.

i whould suggest taking the truck to a good service center and getting a tranny flush performed. sometimes when transmission fluid gets old and nasty it doesnt alow the transmission to perform correctly. hope this helps you.

My transmission wont shift from 2nd to 3rd gear

did you drop the pan replace the filter and add four to five quarts,If still a problem try doing a full transmission flush at a quick lube.
A transmission flush with Lucas trans tune up will probably fix your non shift issue, try this first before looking into a new tranny !
