My garage got very cold during the month of December and my bike does not want to start now. It had started but it turned off and smells like it is flooded. What could be the problem?

Bike should be fuel injected so very hard to flood. Most likely battery was weak from cold and couldn't turn over and spark enough to start. Try charging battery for a few hours, beware of sparks if you smell gas. Hook charger up then turn on.

The bike was running last fall but will not start now but the plugs are not getting any spark, the bike will roll over though.

Is the bike an electric start or a kick start? When you say that the bike will roll over, do you mean that the motor will turn over? If it is an electric start, then it should be able to turn the motor over easily for a few seconds. If it drags or slows down quickly go right to the battery and check open circuit voltage or have the battery load tested. If it has an ignition module, then it might not start to trigger until a certain cranking speed is reached. This a common problem for batteries that are left out in the cold during the winter months. You might just need to give it a charge with a trickle charger. If the battery is OK, then check for power at the coils using a test light. If there is no power at the coils, then check for a fuse or fusible link. If there is power, then it could be a failed ignition module or CDI box. You might be able to have these tested at a bike shop.

As this point you can't get the bike to turn over is this correct? If the engine is turning over but won't start then yes the gas is most likely the problem. Gas after sitting for even a month can evaporate from the fuel system and it leave a fouls smelling deposit behind that clogs up everything. It stinks and it's a mess to clean out. To prevent this from happening use a product that is called "Fuel Stabilizer" in the last few tanks of gas before you put the bike away for the winter or a dormant period. If the motorcycle is in a hot climate or heated garage this foul smelling gas can happen within a few weeks.

My wifes 2003 toyota highlander when she starts it there is what appears to be a gas fume like smell in the car. it seems to go away when the engine isd warm

You should have the fuel injectors and the especially the "cold start injector" checked for leaks. The cold start injector only operates during cold starts. If you don't notice the problem during warm starts, then the cold start injector is the place to start.

I live in Minnesota . I vote for fuel stabilizer and charging the battery overnight once a month. In cold weather batteries hibernate in the cold and do not need constant tending (unless your vehicle has live electronics when it is turned off like a clock, or radio with memory, etc.) If you start and run your bike you will collect moisture in your exhaust(rust), on cool down you collect moisture all over your motor, waste fuel, run a high risk of fowling plugs, put extra wear and tear on your starter, and run down your battery starting your cycle in unfavorable conditions. Definitely: Stabil and charge once a month.

Handbrake wont shift

It appears even when you release the hand brake, the wheels are not free to rotate.

Check for possible seizure; i.e
  • The hand brake cable
  • Wheel cylinder or caliper pistons
  • Brake shoes or pads
or any out of link parts for the hand brake mechanism.
