Have just purchased an 04 XVS 1100 from the coast. Drove it to the mountains and now it wont idle and runs poorly. Seems to run on when throttle backs off and doesn't shut down.
At sea level there is 14.7 psi of air pressure, the higher you go the thinner the air. thus, need more air and less fuel. adjuster your idle air screw mixture.

First question is what constitutes "overheating". Since the car has been parked for years, the thermostat could be sticking closed. The cooling system could have air pockets and need to be bled. The water pump may be corroded inside and not pumping enough volume. If the gauge goes above half way, the fans should start up. But half way should be more or less normal, not hot yet. I would look at flow problems first, beginning with removing the thermostat and driving it without one for a few days. Also check and see if there is a process to bleed the cooling system of air.
Honestly, it would be easier for you to ask this question directly on the site selling spare parts for Yamaha. Just visit this link. Compare the different models or simply ask the consultant a direct question. I always do this before making a purchase. Motorcycles older than 1990 have their own characteristics that should be considered when replacing parts.
Is the bike coming out of winter storage or not been started for a long period of time? Could be extremely air filter or, I suspect the fuel has gummed up in the jets and fuel passages. If this is the case, I recommend at least 1/2 can of SeaFoam be added to existing fuel. Crank and run the engine at high idle for several minutes, shut it down and let set for an hour or so to allow the additive to work on depaoits. Crank and run again. I run 1/4 can with five gallons as a full time deterent to problems with ethanol based fuel.
symtoms of a bad coolant sensor. poor idle, stalling, rich mixture, retarded timing, low idle speed, cold hesitation or stumble, poor fuel milage. ( will also ****** timing ). in some cases you can unplug sensor and the pcm will compensate by running a default air/fuel ratio and in some cases allowing car to run without the sensor.Id just replace it !! if light is on, get vehicle scanned to find problem code. most all auto parts stores will scan for free, auto-zone etc. have a good day !!
first drain the carby, then set your air mixture screw 2 turns out, from the fully turned in position. The starting proceedure is as follows, when the engine is COLD, turn on fuel, pull on the choke fully, and kick the engine over. DO NOT use any throttle, when the engine is cold, and the choke is on. Remember Choke on, NO throttle. When warm, no choke, and a little throttle when kicking.
take a can of carb cleaner an spray all around the carbs an intakes while it is running if it revs up or chokes down you have a intake leak try to tighten them up and see if that corrects it it could also be dirty air breater it would cause it to idle poorly until it warms up
