Your case is the car was over heated.
Here's the cause of over heating:
1) No water inside the cooling systems of the engine.
2)causes of no water: maybe there is a leak somewhere or you forgot to fill it up.
3)Failed water pump
4)Failed thermostst
5)Failed radiator cap
6)Failed radiator fan (electric or clutch type)
7)Clog upper or lower radiator hose

Engine light went on because, one of the sensors sense or detect water inside of the engine, thats why the engine is shutdown you can't start. Wait a few days to start until that sensor is dry. Check the engine oil with the dipstick if the oil turns to white, means oil and water are mix, and needs to replace the head gasket.

If the engine overheated while driving, damage to the cylinder head gasket or engine block/cylinder head may have been done, which would prevent the vehicle from starting.

A standard engine compression check will tell the tale.

1991 Cadillac DeVille (has 110,000 miles on it) suddenly dies while driving. Starts and idles fine, but shuts off after driving only 1-2 blocks. What's wrong and how do we fix it?

There are many things that can contribute to this problem. It sounds like it may be ignition related. Possibly an ignition control module or ignition coil. The check engine light coming on while driving is the key to finding the problem. The light comes on when the computer finds a problem and will then store it in its memory. Have the codes checked for what the computer has found to be at fault and with a little diagnostics, should lead you to the problem

Driving along lights dimmed, instrument panel died, loss of power then engine cut out & wouldn't start. Starts with a jump but when i turn key to heat glow plug, instrument panel goes mad

I assume there's a problem with alternator. Check the grounding to engine, check continuity of a positive wire between alternator and battery. the energizing voltage should be checked as well. Might be the bad connection between battery and vehicle body grounding. Diesel cars are sensitive even in a little loss of connection and rust in the connection points.

2000 s10 Blazer dies very 3-6 weeks for no reason

i would check your ignition system. you would need a meter for this but look for broke or loose connections. if it was a fuel problem i dont think it would just start up after 20 minutes. or you might try your ignition switch. if its shorting or something then ya well it would cut your engine off real quick
