About 6 months ago my 4 wheeler began having this problem. You could be riding along and out of the clear blue it would just die. No hit and miss, just all of a sudden, no fire. I would wait 10 minutes or so and off I would go and maybe it would be fine for days, and then die it would. It has now gotten to the point that the last time I tried to ride it it started right up and before I could ge backed out of the garage it died and nothing that I have tried will bring it back to life. Early on I thought it might be a broken wire from the handlebar down to the termination. I tried starting it in every handlebar position with no apparent sucess.I've got a feeling that it is something it is something simple, just finding it. PS The product category list did not contain my model and size in the pull down menu. It is a 1996 bayou 400 with 147 hrs on the meter I am the original owner and this is the first problem I have ever had
Start with the basics. Do you have spark? If no, check to see that the coil has power (unless it's CDI or EFI, if it's that, check that the unit has power).
I'm sorry to say that this sounds like a failing EFI unit or crankshaft position sensor - but it could indeed be a bad contact. The bright side here is that it's failed 100% of the time so it'll be easier finding faults..
Oh if you have points ignition (not likely on a '96) check to see if the points have closed up.
