I have V&H mufflers on my nomad. can i safely remove the baffles w/o damaging the engine
Generally removing the baffles will not effect the performance of a bike at all. If you have also modified the air intake then you will need to have the fuel injection remapped or the jetting in the carburetor changed, but 99% of the time this is not necessary when only removing baffles or changing mufflers. If they are the type of baffles that can be unbolted and put back then you have nothing at all to loose by taking them out and trying. I have been riding and modifying my own bikes since 1984.
Probably not.
As you know or should be aware, everything on a motorcycle is there for a reason and a purpose. All parts complement all other parts. The muffler has these parts inside so your riding will not be annoying to others as well as to provide proper pressure and back pressure for the proper operation of your engine.
The best rule of thumb to follow for modifying your motorcycle's engineering is dont.
Probably not what you wanted to hear. I have been riding for just over 37 years and have followed my own advice and had pretty good results.
