Front cylinder will not fire when on choke but will back fire occasionally but seems to run ok when engine is hot. Both cylinders are sparking perfectly . Smells of unburnt fuel. Back fires when shut off throttle at high speeds. Any ideas?

backfires out of the exhaust. Why wont the front cylinder run on choke when cold?
what are the tappit clearance on yamaha xv 1100 virago
front cylinder won't run on choke when cold persistent back firing when engine warm
When it backfires, is it out of the exhaust or carburettor? This could be a few things. The smell of un-burnt fuel is a clue! It could have a stuck/dirty needle & seat on the front cylinder! These bikes flood into the cylinders.(so fuel dosn't spill on ground.... for anti-polution). It could be a tight valve clearance, hense the backfire but this can also be caused by the flooding. It is also possable that the carburettor syncronization(balance) is out. Try a quick fix on the needle/seat if you think it's that.(with the fuel tap set to prime if its vacumatic or on if it's not) Loosen the carby drain screws to drain the bowls, and as the fuel is draining, tap on the bowls with the back of a screw driver. This is often enough to loosen the offending obstruction & can sometimes solve the problem. Hope this proves helpful in some way! Regards
