Put an multimeter on the battery prion to pushing the start button....wright down voltage of battery, turn bike over via the start button, did the battery drop below 9 volts? if so, go buy a battery from a reputabe dealer that will charge it for a mimimum of 10 hrs @.2a cycle, then retry....if u still have problems order a starter relay kit, test & clean the starter, install new parts & go riding..

When trying to start the bike (1989 1200 sportster) sometimes there is no connection, sometime a clicking sound, and sometime it engages.

This sounds like a bad starter relay -- that is what is making the clicking noise -- it sounds like it has burned contacts which sometimes connect and sometimes don't.

More info, let me know.

Need to know if my battery or starter is bad, or both. origanal 96 starter, gel battery 6 yrs old. clicks when trying to start, lites do not dim at all just clicks fast . 1996 harley sporster

I would lay odds on the battery if it's six years old but that's guesswork, I prefer mechanics. Take the battery out of the bike and take it to an automotive parts house. Ask them to check the battery with a load test. That will tell the tale.

If the battery is good, what you may be hearing is the starter relay clicking. Since your lights are not dimming, the starter is not even being engaged. The starter relay is a one inch cube device usually black in color. On your '96 model, I think it's on the backside of the oil tank. You must take the seat off to see it. Try to start the bike and see if that's what is making the clicking sound. If so, replace the relay. Check these two things before you go replacing the starter. Starters aren't cheap.

solid mounted motor should ground to motor or frame did you maybe for get the smaller wire to positive term it goes to the main fuse you didnt say whether you had lights or not but theres too many possibilities if you got a book i'm geussing no but they'll have the complete wireing diagrams my advice get a mechanic down there it'll be reasonable cause if he knows his stuff it'll be pretty quick and do keep in mind paintjobs have bred lots of basket cases

Wifes harley 2007 1200L sporster, started ran about 4 miles turned bike off. went to start back started but wounld not run acted like it jump timing, was spitting and popping, now starter starter wont spin...

Take the spark plugs out of the engine and see if the engine turns over then. If it does but the engine will not turn over with the plugs in it, have the battery checked. Never assume a battery is good because it's not very old.

If the engine will not turn over with the spark plugs out, it sounds like may have serious problems. In this case, I'd consult a professional mechanic.

You can repost if you find out more information for us to work from. Good Luck

2006 sportster 1200 low won't start. replace battery and when I try to start it make a clicking sound. how manny volt is the battery?

If I understand the question, the battery is 12 volts, but if U put a volt meter on it, it should read at least 12.5 if its good. When U fire up the bike, it should go up to about 13 + volts. Often, a new battery needs to be charged.

Won't start

its either a bad or drained battery or the starter selenoid. check your battery voltage using a tester or put it on a charger, if that doesnt solve your problem you should look at your starter selenoid
