I'm having trouble starting my '87 kawasaki zl 600. I thought that there was a charging problem, which still may be the case. The first sign of a problem was an electrical sound while pressing the starter button. i had made sure there was a charge on the battery, even tho it wasn't fully charged, and the whole time you press the button the noise occurs. I isolated the sound to what i'm assuming is the starter solenoid. It's connected right off the positive terminal of the battery. the positive connects to the top of this part, and has another connection that runs into the motor. there is also a wire clip that connects in between the two terminal connects of this part. i'm curious if this is the only problem on the bike or signaling a bad starter. I'm hoping that there isn't a charging problem. i can jump start it from my friends truck but i'm weary to do that too often and fry another connection. The bike will stay running by itself once it's warmed up. even if the battery isn't fully charged. What could be the problem? Also, is it true that the bike wont charge while its at idle? i wouldn't think they would design the charging system that way...but it hasn't been ridden a lot in the last four years until recently and within the last year has probably only gone 40-50 miles. small trips to the store and not leaving 2nd gear. Since I bought the bike i've tried to take it out for a few miles each time i ride it to get the motor used to running again. the previous owner says it's maybe running at 60% of it's true power. could that be from sitting so long as well as breaking in the new parts that were installed right before i purchased it? PLEASE HELP!!! this is my only transportation on top of being my first motorcycle.

    so if it is making that noise it's probably just that part? that's what i first assumed but i'm curious if it makes that noise to alert another problem within that system. It still leaves me curious about why the "new" battery died in the first place

Well it sounds like your starter solenoid is bad.

And yes 99% of all charging systems WILL NOT charge at idle.

87 kawasaki not providing 100% of its power!!

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, your description of "...off and on it shows me it has the power it should..." is significant as it indicates that it would not be a mechanical / engine problem.

Offhand, almost always, erratic performance and/or intermittent power could be: 1) electrical (least likely), 2) air/fuel mix (likely) and/or 3) carb (most likely).

Interesting though if as you posted, the bike has "...new...carbs...". If it were so, then a possibility to consider is that the carbs need synchronization.

Preliminary checks:
  • at cold start, determine which cylinders heat up faster / slower using water spray;
  • determine the colors of the burns / tips of the sparkplugs at what cylinder;
  • loosen the drain screws of each carb and collect the fuel from the drain hose. Compare the quantity and quality amongst all 4 bowls.

Incidentally, is everything stock or aftermarket items installed such as free/open breathers air filters and/or exhaust system?

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

1986 zl 600 eliminator. Quits while driving.

I had a similar problem. Mine would continue running, but it felt like it dropped cylinders. Sputtered, backfires...etc. Check your ignitor box (under the seat, attached to the rear fender. Start the bike up to operating temp, and if it does the problem, the tech that fixed mine squeezed the ignitor box, and it returned to normal. Got a new one checking salvage yards online.
