2000 Ford Ranger SuperCab Logo
Anonymous Posted on Oct 20, 2009

I have a 2001 Ford ranger supercab that makes rattling noises. It has a 4.0L SOHC. It makes a very fast and loud metallic rattle wich softens anfter about a second or so when I first start it for the day. If I need to start the engine after that later on in the day, it won't make the niose at all or it will be much less pronouced. There is also a fast rattle noise from the engine area that happens right when the automatic transmission shifts from one gear to the next which goes away as soon as the next gear is reached. The noise becomes less pronouced the longer I drive. What could these noises be? Could they be linked?

The engine won't make the rattle noises when I rev the engine up to 2000 or 3000 rpms in park. It only seems to happen when the engine is under load. Oil pressure should be fine; I had to replace the pressure switch last week.

4.0l's are notorious for valve rattle on cold start-up. There is really nothing you can do to make it go away short of completely replacing the valve train in the top end, and that isn't a permanent fix. It's is an top end oiling issue from the factory. Just don't race your engine on cold start-up until the rattle stops.

The rattle in the transmission sounds to me to be more of a loose dust shield/heat shield around the transmission or exhaust than a mechanical issue.

These engines are known for timing chain issues, to fix, the engine needs to come out. find a qualified repair shop that has done these before and has the tools to do it.

Could be cam chain rattle. Famous for sloppy chains and inferior tensioners. Starts about 100k and downhill from there. Could try an engine flush as tensioners may be sludged. I have a 4.0L with a rattle at start up but stops after 5 seconds. Chain is shot.

Loud rattle noise under truck between 2,000 and 3,000 rpms. this happens through all gears and when out of gear.

if you have a protection pan on the bottom of the vehicle, check that to be sure its tight, if you have rear wheel drive, make sure the drive shaft and u joints are ok,, if all those check out to be fine, check your motor mounts. under carriage rattles can be a real pain to locate,

My ford focus zetec makes a rattleing noise

spraying WD40 on drive belts is not a good option as it can cause slippage it is better to use silicon spray or ordinary soap, rub the soap on the belt when the engine is stopped,as for the squeak it could well be the tensioner replace it first it may be the cheapest to start with.....hope this helps....cheers

Loud squeaking and rattling when you accelerate after a stop

Is the underside rusty? If so, take it to a qualified welding and autobody repair shop to have new metal welded on.

Your symptoms sound like the engine or transmission mounts may have deteriorated.

Manual Transmission rattling and rough driving.

If the truck was ran low on fluid to the point it clangs and bangs, the internal damage is done.
The best you can hope for is burnt bearings and hopefully the shafts are not scored. Disassembly is the only solution. Or a used transmission.
