Most likely what you are hearing is a slightly loose rocker arm clicking when it contacts the valve. Even when they are adjusted properly they can make some noise - depending on the condition of the engine oil and the temperature of the engine. You might look into having your valve clearance checked and adjusted. Change your oil if you haven't recently and you might consider running a heavier, synthetic oil - especially if you have more than maybe 30,000 miles on the engine.
Realistically, you should have the valve clearance checked/adjusted every 15,000 miles and you oil changed every 4,000-5,000 miles max for synthetic oils, less for conventional oils.
Oil drain plug is located near the bottom of the engine, left side toward the front. The oil filter element is located on the right side of the engine under the cover toward the front. Changing the oil filter usually requires removal of the front exhaust pipe. There is an aftermarket filter relocation kit that replaces the filter element with a spin on filter that mounts on the front of the bike.
o.k easy one this .First get good motorcycle oil 15/40 semi synthetic and a new oil filter first, never use car oil.
Warm the engine up to get good oil flow.
Remove the oil drain plug at the bottom of the engine, dont loose the seal washer.
drain the oil into a container, and remove the oil filter as well.
replace washer and oil plug do not over tighten, hard hand pressure only with quality spanner.
fill oil filter with oil and oil `O`ring with oil to replace by tight hand pressure only no tools.
Fill engine oil through oil filler cap to correct level between the two marks on the dip stick, bike must be up-right for best accuracy of oil level.
There done.
Just a bit over 3 quarts(w/filter change) 20/40w oil,200cc of 80/90gear oil for the rear(i prefer the Yamaha brand) also recomment new drain washers 214-1198-01-00
There are forums that will give you step by step instructions on how to do it if you Google it.You may also find a free service manual online.
I have a 1600 in my shop now and you have to drain the engine ,change the oil filter and drain the oil tank, fill the tank with 2 quarts oil,run engine for 15 seconds, add 2 more quarts oil ,run bike for 30 seconds then check oil level in the tank and adjust level if needed.
May also need special wrench to remove filter.
hi buddy the oil reccomended/grade 5w-40 i recomend using silkolene pro 4 plus 5w-40 AND ADD 3.6LITRES WITH OIL FILTER CHANGED OR 3.1LITRES WITH STANDARD CHANGE
i think the oil filter is at the front behind a round finned cover, if you find the drain plug it should be right above it, it shoud tell you how much oil it takes right next to the filler
This may be due to old oil. I'd first try changing the oil. The viscosity of old oil may be to thin causing serious run off in the top end. All of the lubrication may be off of the valve assembly causing it to chatter and make these noises until the motor can re-lubricate the valve train.
Also, it may be due to low oil, to heavy of a wieght of oil (such as 15w40 or 20x50). I believe with most of the 04's the recommended oil weight is 5w30.
Try an oil change and see if the noise goes away. If it doesn't I'd do a quick visual inspection under the hood for rattling parts while the engine is running. It could just be a loose housing or something causing the noise. Hope this helps bud!
