I have a 2007 Yamaha R6. Today I tried to start

I have a 2007 Yamaha R6. Today I tried to start it and it took several attemts to get it to start. It idled slow and gradually the RPMs picked up. The temperature light was on and the temp read 253 degrees even though it was cold. A number (presuming an error code) showed up below the temp reading, error code 21. The cooling fan turned on immediately when I attempted to start it. I'm guessing a bad temp sensor??? Thoughts?
