Wont idle I have a Yamaha 50 ATV and it will not idle without the choke on full. Warm or cold it does not matter as soon as I switch off the choke the engine throttles down and dies. I pulled the carb and cleaned the jets but that did nothing. Please help; my 6-year-old son thinks I can fix anything.

As you can see, this carbureted engine has an electric choke. The cold sets that butterfly on the choke plate and there is a heater coil that warms up and disengages it. IF that electric choke heater burns out, it wont release the choke plate.

I'm not familiar with your engine configuration, but on some of the older bikes, vibration eventually can cause a wire to break in the coil. When the engine is cold, the wires make contact and it runs, but as soon as it gets hot, the connection is broken or compromised and the spark quits or drives you crazy.
Since your bike runs when cold and quits when hot, I'd be looking for electrical rather than fuel problems.

Hi Joe, I had asked for a little clarification and have not received any information. I will answer this question based on the generator is in good working order and it is a recoil start. Open the petcock, (this is the fuel valve) and give it about a minute to fill the fuel bowl on the carburetor. If your generator has an engine an on/off kill switch, set to on. If the generator has an auto idle switch set it to off. If the engine has a throttle lever located under the carburetor, push it all the way down (full throttle). Pull the choke knob out completely, there is a detent on the choke for half choke, pull it past this for full choke. pull the recoil starter rapidly. As soon as the engine starts running push the choke knob to half choke, this will allow the engine to run smooth while it's warming up. Depending on the climate that you are in, warm up time will vary. After a minute or two in cold climates start pushing the choke knob in, if it starts to run poorly pull it back out too the half position and let it warm up some more. When you can posh the choke in without the engine faltering it is ready to go. In warmer climates you might be able to start the engine without the choke or in the halfway position. Robin Subaru makes some of the finest small engines available. I would choose a Robin over a Honda every time. your idle air mix might need adjusted. also look for air leaks between carb and air filter

You need to take off your carburetor , disassemble it, and clean the jets (specifically the slow jet) and the passageways in the carburetor body that feed the gas to the carburetor throat. Carefully set your air screw setting back to stock setting. and reassemble. Inspect the intake manifold and air box tubes for cracks and separations. That should get you idling again.

The choke should only be used when starting cold. After the bike is warmed up you can turn the choke off. If it keeps shutting off after being warmed up for a few minutes, then check your gas/air ratio for the idle air mixture knob. Loosen it up 1/4 turn to allow more gas to flow.
