Disconnect the battery first thing, negative wire first. The starter on your bike is a Nippondenso type starter. The solenoid and starter motor are built together as a single unit. The solenoid part of the starter is the top part that is shaped like a pentagon. The motor itself is below that part and is round.

You will have to remove the outer primary cover to remove the jack shaft, the little gear that turns the outer clutch drum. When you remove the starter, there is a splined coupling inside that goes in the starter in a particular direction. The end with the bevel goes towards the starter. Make sure you take notice of this and mark it if you can't remember which way it goes in.

Other than this, changing the starter is pretty straight forward.

2001 dodge caravan clicks when trying to start

The clicking sound is coming from your starter solenoid. Which could mean your solenoid or starter or both are bad. But don't rush out and buy replacements until you have troubleshot the problem a little. First, try a jump start. If that works and the car starts, then either your battery is not putting out enough amperage to turn your engine over, which could mean your battery cables are corroded and not making good connection or your alternator is not charging your battery when the car is running. If it started, suggest you take it to an auto parts store and have them test your battery and alternator.

Now if it doesn't start when jump starting, you still need to do some more troubleshooting. Yes, it could be the solenoid and or the starter, but it could also be something internal to the engine. Take off the serpentine belt and try to turn the engine over with a large socket wrench. If it turns, then it is your starter/solenoid, if it doesn't then it is internal to your engine.

Only clicks when trying to start, even with jumpers to good battery. have lights etc

Going to need to replace starter solenoid or starter (usually solenoid is no longer available sperately). You can always pull it out and take it to the local parts store for testing.

TIP: Sometimes whacking the starter with a wrench or hammer a couple of times will get it going.

Hope this helps.

When new battery is connected starter whirs without key in ignition -- 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport

Sounds like the starter solenoid is stuck on, most likely need to replace the starter, sometimes what can be done is tap the solenoid with a wrench or a small hammer and it may come loose, if it stops i would still recommend replacing the starter because it will happen again 9/10 times. Also check the wiring to the starter and make sure the start wire is not shorted or installed improperly. If there is constant voltage at the smaller start signal wire, the problem is somewhere in the wiring or the keyswitch.

Harley davidson dyna, when hitting the starter button you here the relay click but does not turn over and if you repeatily hit the starter button it will start...relay? or selenoid? starter....

First things first...how new is your battery? A weak battery will do this. If your battery is new (no more than 5 years old), the starter solenoid is bad.

Check the battery voltage first. If that is within spec, replace the solenoid.
