Look on the left side of the bike just below the battery. You'll see a hose that either has a plug in it or one that is plugged onto the frame. Take this hose lose and the oil will drain. Refill with three quarts of 20W50 oil that meets H-D specs.

On all Sportsters, the primary oil is also the transmission lubricant. Put approx. one quart of oil in the primary, H-D Syn 3 20W50 synthetic engine oil.

I never pull the derby cover unless I have to fix something. I do exactly what you described and have for 20 years. Never had a problem.

look on the left side of the bike back underneath the battery. You'll find a large diameter hose back there with either a plug in it or the hose connects to the frame. It will have one of those spring type hose clamps on it. Take this hose off and drain the oil out of the tank.

No, you don't have to take the oil tank off you just need the right tools. I use a long Phillips screwdriver if the bolt has the provisions for it's use. If not, I a 1/4" drive extension with a 10mm socket on it and a rachet. Works for me. Always disconnect the negative side first. Then connect your battery tender wire to the positive terminal. Reconnect the negative side last. This my keep you from arcing the battery to the oil tank and maybe popping a hole in the tank.

After changing the oil on every bike I own, (So that I know the level is correct.) I then make a dip stick for that bike. I use a T handled alen wrench since it is never a straight shot down to the oil. I insert it as far as I can at whatever angle it takes to bottom out. Then when I pull it out I wrap it with tape just above the oil line to create a full mark. From then on I always know where I'm at.

hi mate i recomend using silkolene comp 4 10w-40also when filling with oil it should come 1/2-3/4 full on the sight glass or on the dipstick it should hit the top line/it will say full
