I have a 1989 sportster that has a bad top end rattle at speed limit and above . it was 1200 kitted before i got it so dont know much on engine history. engine has plenty of power and dose not use oil. have replaced lifters and checked rockers for bad wear but seem ok . have also replaced voes switch .retarding the timing did not make any difference and oil is getting to the top end.what else should icheck for as i have been told that some after market pistons can rattle.all i can say is the rattle noise does not inspire great confidence . would be real thankful for any advice cheers baz .
That rattle if its a piston probably is the piston pin.If your piston were making the noise it would get louder and lock up sooner or later I would not run it until its fixed it will tear up your motor.
