SOURCE: I have a 97 Grand Am Which the theft system is

Very Very Common GM Problem.
It is called a PassLock 2 system.

You can reset the computer yourself very easily.

Turn key to ON position (do NOT start). Leave in ON position for EXACTLY 10 MINUTES. As SOON as the anti-theft light quits flashing, and turns off, then IMMEDIATELY start the car.

That''s it!

You can do this everytime and it will work.

They do sell a passlock 2 bypass kit very affordable online that you can install but you won't have anti-theft but you won't have the problem either.

My 97 grand caravan wont start unless I keep trying to move the steering wheel . it seems when you get the wheel in the right spot it will start.

check for worn wires under the dash shorting on the steering shaft
replace the ignition switch --not the key barrel and tumbler

I have a 96 Pontiac grand am we 2.4L twin cam the anti theft system kicked on but I followed the steps and reset it then it started coming back on reset ran fine then just one day bam died not like running...

the lamps you need to watch the lamps. they don't lie.
so now it dont start (but cranks)
the operators guide tells you what the lights mean, lost that.?
2 lamps are security or IMMOBILIZers have a lamp
  • off means OK
  • on means its bad ( locked out, )
  • flashing means that system is sick.
generally. got both lamps? look carefully.

IMMO kills engine, if car is tired to start. with wrong key. (and or fob)
security is theft alarm. and some cut spark others cut fuel other cut
some even cut cranking,
does yours crank?
or cranks ok but wont start.
no matter the lamps are FIRST> never last. never replace parts until you know what the lamps mean.

see this?

http://newrockies.com/5232/need-know-gm-passkey-security-systems/

Passlock: System must detect proper R-code within ignition lock (or ignition switch) in order to start engine. Does NOT have chip in key.

look at the lamp, and do not dis believe it,

97 Jeep Cherokee in line 6 dies while driving or sometimes while idling. Sometimes starts back immediately but cuts back off or won't start until you sit about 15 minutes.

there is a cranksensor at back of engine top of bellhousing i think if you lay under vehicle on drivers side looking up where transmission meets engine you will see a little bracket with wires going into can be removed with long extension on swivel little hard to get new back in place and start bolts had customers wife,s jeep it would cut-off or not start she would get a ride he would go to vehicle later in day to see what happened and it would start he would think it was just her and nothing wrong but a day or two later same senario we finally nail it with cranksensor no more problem

Anti theft light comes on the car won't start

Your "inmobiliser" system is actived.

The anti-theft feature prevents the car from being started when one of several anti-theft devices is faulty are have otherwise been activated. The problem you descibe might be the ignition swith, which is known to wear out quickly on those models. The system can be completly disabled only when the car is running (meaning the teft deterent system is inactive after the Passlock II system detects the proper key in the ingition). A wire can be cut that would perminantly disable Passlock II, meaning any key that opens the door (or a screwdriver) could start the car. If the ignition swtich goes out or this wire is cut while the engine is off (theft deterent system is active) then the car will have to be towed back to the dealer to have the ignition system replaced and reprogrammed.

I have called Chevy and asked how to fix this problem. If you turn the key to the on position, right before it cranks when the lights and radio turn on. Leave it there for ten minutes until the anti theft light turns off. Then turn the key to the off position and then try starting the car.

Rumour has it that it is a yellow wire to be cut. Do more research, but D O N ' T cut it with the engine off. See first paragraph above.

Hope this help (remember rated and comment this). Good luck.

97 Bravada keys locked in ignition, will not start, brakes locked

You need at least 10.5 volts in the electrical system for the ignition keys to release from the switch. Be careful that you don't damage the ignition switch, or your going to have to replace it if the passlock system is damaged. Good luck and boost the battery to get the keys out of the switch.
