Does this happen in the city or does it happen when you are out in the middle of nowhere? I have seen laser detectors that are falsely triggered by various lighting devices that contain wavelengths of light similar to those used in police laser.

If this is annoying and you dont want to hear it, you can locate the receiver element that detects the laser signal and cover it up with a piece of black electrical tape. That should stop whatever is causing your problem unless there is something actually broken inside the unit.

Thanks,

K and f off

Power off the RD using its power button. Then hold down the two programming buttons and press the power button while holding down these the two programming buttons. Release all three buttons once RESET is displayed on the RD's display. Your 8500 has now been reset back to the original factory settings with all bands enabled. You can download a PDF duplicate of the original user manual from Escort's web site.

Laser problem with radar detector

This is caused from voltage fluctuation. Your car will draw down power from the radar detector and it goes off. Passport/escort need to come out with an inline voltage conditioner. Maybe soon.

Laser warning - Multiple false alerts

Although the detector could have internal problems, it is possible that it is coming from a real source.
A route I took between home and business triggered mine along the same stretch every time I passed it and after looking a a map and comparing it with the stretch I drove, I found that the Marine airbase at Miramar California was visible (line-of-sight) between two mountains only along that stretch.

Note if the falsing happens at about the same point each time.
I just learned to ignore the laser alarm if it triggered during that 1-2 mile 'window.'

8500 Alerts for no aparent reason

Got to the bottom of my false alarming situation. I finally called Escort and discussed the behavior with the technician who immediately concluded the antenna was failling and needed a repair. $30 worth of shipping and about a week later I got my repaired unit back and it works perfectly. Not sure the root cause but I am going to treat it as gently as possible and hope it keeps working, I sure like it better than the V1.
