clean the fuel system , carbs etc ! check your wheel bearings , headstock bearings and clamps are tight , tyre walls are ok and tyre pressure ok , i once used a metzler me33 and it was all over the place , bin'd it even though it was new as it nearly killed me ! put a bridgestone on and was perfect ! check your fork oil is good and correct level etc , fork springs are ok and same length and air pressure even ! frame clamps tight , no cracks etc !
The wheel wobble could be balance on road wheel,check n/s track rod end for wear this could be why the tyre is wearing.If you change track rod end get it re-tracked and the front wheels balanced...Good-luck...
problems like this are best discussed with an accredited bike shop who has experience with wheel wobbles
you have changed the front tire to radial but did you change the back tire at the same time as radials and cross ply ( bias ply) tires have different handling characteristics
the wobble may be like a lack of compatibility between case constructions and I am thinking this because you say that the problem goes when changing back to the bias ply
If the wobble is very noticeable at low speed I would first suspect the tyre or tyres. Start by changing each front tyre with the spare and see if that affects the symptoms. I am assuming that you have checked that the wheel nuts are not loose? I hope I have been of help but please do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.
from the sound of it i dont think its the rack or the pump but more like a simple case of deformed tyres ,jack front up and spin the wheel to see if the tyre is perfectly round ,yes i know the tread looks ok but just try it and see then post what you have noticed ,for some reason tyres seem to deform more in later years than 40 yrs ago when crossply tyres were used
You can develop a wobble from the front tire if it's been run under inflated. I had the same problem on my Fat Boy, the tire looked OK and I thought it was out of balance but when I repaced the tire (15K miles) the it solved the problem.
Hello geoff100lee.... many of the "C's" have a small wobble in the steering at certain speeds...most notable while decelerating... Two considerations that control a front end shimmy are the tightness of the steering head bearing and steering dampers. Since most bikes don't have steering dampers it's EXTREMELY important that the head bearing is properly adjusted. Your dealer is most likely aware of this problem on the "C", even if he won't admit to it. There is a fix for it using tapered needle bearings. The bearings are about 40 buxs, but requires pressing and a few special tools to install. If you search VTXcafe.com or VTXOA.com forums you can find instructions. Couple of checks , mud in front rims will give you a wobble. Front tire cord seperation or loose wheel nuts. , Wore out tie rod end, front wheel bearing play, or a weight has fallen off the rim and it needs balancing. If it is vibrating your steering wheel, have the front end looked at right away.
