I bought a new battery for this bike i picked up. when the engine is cold it seems to be charging. my test for this is my voltmeter and i disconnected the battery ground and the bike continued running fine. after riding the bike for a while i checked the voltage again and was only getting 11 or 12 volts depending on the rpms. lower volts at higher rpms. i checked for continuity between the three wires coming from the generator and i had it. should i be able to put my volt meter on the leads from the generator and get a reading? not sure if there are any other parts that could get hot and not work. suggestions?
The generator will produce ac voltage not dc so the meter needs to read ac voltage. the readings need to be taken between the three wires using two at a time until all combinations have been tried. readings should all be the same. Engine will have to be run at about 5000rpm while readings are obtained. Other possible problem could be the regulator / rectifier unit breaking down when hot.
