I have a 1998 V Star 650 Classic. The gears will shift easily when I'm sitting with the engine turned off. The clutch lever is "floppy" and won't engage to allow me to shift gears with the bike running. The "lower" end of the cable moves when I move the lever. The bike runs well in neutral. Shifting gears "pop" the clutch and kills the engine. Anybody have any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it? @

Bleed your slave cylinder on the sprocket cover and refill the hydraulic fluid. If you have any leaks you will get air in the system and it will not fully disengage the clutch. As for the 750, they have cable clutches and you just need to adjust the slack of the cable.

Your clutch lever should have a cable connected to it. Trace it from the lever down to the engine and make sure nothing is disconnected or out of place. That big knurled knob next to the lever is the adjusment and locknut for cable tension. Loosen lock nut, srew cable away from lever until you have only 1/4 " of play between lever and the stop. You should feel tension coming back into the lever...If you have a bicycle ,it is the same drill for adjusting your brakes...look and see...it may help you understand the process...any bicycle mech can show you...maybe a neighbor...Good Luck to you friend....Tim

Known issue with the 650 vstars...no recall from yamaha though. The drive shaft splines are **** and they shear off on the shaft and the side that goes in the gearbox. Gearbox (rear drive unit) = $825 Shaft = 160. Have to buy the gearbox as a whole because yamaha is greedy.

I'm having the same issue with my 82 xs 400. Mine hasn't been sitting at all though. I rode it home two weeks ago. I put different bars on it, took off the mufflers and that's really about it. It starts and idles fine. If I put it on the stand and put it in gear, it will go through the gears with the wheel in the air spinning freely. Once I sit on it and put it in gear to go, it shuts off. I don't get it.

Have you just replaced the clutch? Taken out the transaxle, and put it back in? Are you sure transmission was in good condition before this? If so, review your procedure carefully to be sure you got it all back right.
Watch the slave cylinder while someone depresses clutch. You should see the little plunger move slightly out and move the clutch lever back. The lever moves the release bearing inside bell housing into contact with the pressure plate. If slave cylinder doesn't move at all, try bleeding again. The plunger has to move when clutch is engaged.
I'm not sure what you mean by "will shift but won't go into gear". You mean it's actually going into a gear position and car won't move? Or it won't go into any gear, period. As if you had no clutch?
