If it's a Harley-Davidson Sportster you're referring to. I'd suggest trying a Harley-Davidson Forum:

One other thought, you could also have bad spark plug caps or even a partially fouled plug. If you have fancy flashing plug caps they can cause poor spark. At any rate this would be inexpensive and easy thing to try. If new plugs do not help, carry the old ones as spares in your tool kit.

Depends on the click. If it's a soft click, it could be a bad starter relay. If it's a loud click, it's probably the starter solenoid. The starter relay used to be mounted on the backside of the oil tank but they may have moved it behind the triangular plate on the left side of the bike. To determine the problem, look at the end of the starter and you'll see a single small wire plugged on the solenoid just above the five sided plate that is held on by three 3mm bolts. Remove this wire and connect a test light or a volt meter to it. Turn the switch on and press the start button. If the light lights up or the meter shows battery voltage, the starter relay is good. If not, replace the relay.

If the click is a loud click, the contacts in the solenoid may be burned. Remove the five sided plate and remove the plunger and spring. Look at the two large copper contacts. Are they badly burned? If so,you need to replace them. You can order the parts from Harley or most aftermarket sources sell them.

Good Luck

Trans uses the primary fluid for lubrication. As long as the primary fluid is at the proper level, all is good.

My 2005 harley sporster 1200 keeps on stalling after an hour or so of riding. the odometer goes first then it putters for a bit and dies. and when i try to restart i can't even get it to roll over

Hi Sa_larade, and the usual suspects are:
1.Ignition/Light Key Switch not in IGNITION position.
2.Engine Stop switch in the OFF position.
3.Discharged battery, loose or corroded connections check negative cable at both ends. (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank Angle Sensor tripped and Ignition/Light Key Switch not cycled to Off and then back to
5. Starter control circuit, relay or solenoid faulty.
6. Electric starter shaft pinion gear not engaging or over-running clutch slipping.
7. Security alarm not disarming

When trying to start the bike (1989 1200 sportster) sometimes there is no connection, sometime a clicking sound, and sometime it engages.

This sounds like a bad starter relay -- that is what is making the clicking noise -- it sounds like it has burned contacts which sometimes connect and sometimes don't.

More info, let me know.

Wifes harley 2007 1200L sporster, started ran about 4 miles turned bike off. went to start back started but wounld not run acted like it jump timing, was spitting and popping, now starter starter wont spin...

Take the spark plugs out of the engine and see if the engine turns over then. If it does but the engine will not turn over with the plugs in it, have the battery checked. Never assume a battery is good because it's not very old.

If the engine will not turn over with the spark plugs out, it sounds like may have serious problems. In this case, I'd consult a professional mechanic.

You can repost if you find out more information for us to work from. Good Luck

Harley has a new battery and want turnover it just has A CLICKING SOUND NEXT TO BATTERY .WHAT DO I DO NEXT ITS A NEW SPORSTER 1200 WITH ONLY 400 MILES

put an multimeter on the battery prion to pushing the start button....wright down voltage of battery, turn bike over via the start button, did the battery drop below 9 volts? if so, go buy a battery from a reputabe dealer that will charge it for a mimimum of 10 hrs @.2a cycle, then retry....if u still have problems order a starter relay kit, test & clean the starter, install new parts & go riding..

Hi I purchase a 2001 sporster custom.It came

The positive wire to the head light is short circuiting somewhere remove the headlight and follow the wire back to its origin, check the condition of the wire and whereever it makes contact with metal surfaces it may be getting pinced some where in the wiring harness, worst case scenario the headlight relay is bad and must be located and replaced. I hope this helps, ride on.

Won't start

its either a bad or drained battery or the starter selenoid. check your battery voltage using a tester or put it on a charger, if that doesnt solve your problem you should look at your starter selenoid
