1991 Jeep Wrangler has been sitting in a garage for 3 years. It starts and shuts right off. I spray ether in it and it starts then shuts back off again. It seems as though I am not getting fuel. What do you recommend? Thanks!

Im asuming it was running fine when it was garaged? if so, then the first thing you need to do is to drain the fuel tank and flush the fuel lines. when gas gets old, it simply wont ignite. and over that time, it thickens into almost a syrup. so you need to drain and clean the fuel tank, fuel lines, and replace the fuel filter. im not sure if that year jeep is carbureted or fuel injected, but if it has a carb., then that will definitely need to be cleaned. or for fuel injection, use a good fuel injector cleaner mixed with your new gas. once it starts, it wlil run a bit rough, but once the old fuel gets burned out of the system, it should gradually improve.

Spray some starting fluid into the throttle body. If it starts then you have a fuel problem. If it does not, then check to see if you have spark to the plugs.

How do you change a ignition pick up on a 1991 jeep wrangler 4.0

Remove distributor cap, ( two screw ) remove rotor, sit under rotor, look's like a black cover, disconnect harness going to distributor, come right out, two hole's on pick up is what hold pick up in place with distributor cap screw's.

Sounds like the drainback valve inside the pump is shot...try just turning the key on and waiting a minute and see if it starts that way.

1991 Jeep Fuel Control Issue

Hey Mudkicker,

Who ever thought of putting an electric fuel pump inside a tank of gas........

Check your other gauges for accuracy. They do that when a ground is loose.

Check the wiring from the fuel tank along the longitudinal frame for frays and shorts. Plugs are secured.

Under the hood, passenger side, check the fuel pump relay. Switch it with one of the others to test it.

Bring the vehicle to an auto parts store. Ask them to break out he code reader. Check for diag codes

So, when the engine is hot, it won't work. Do you have any idea what the ambient temperature is?
The causes might be 1) vapor lock; 2) percolation; or 3) PCV malfunctioning. This is all explained in a brief diagnostic article at

Will a 1998 jeep 4L 2.5 motor work in a 1991 jeep wrangler?

Most likely yes. One thing about the older Jeeps is that they did not change the models much from year to year. If the two jeeps had the same engine, they are probably nearly 100% interchangeable.
