SOURCE: Need to set floats on an xj 700
with the float bowl off and holding the carb level, adjust the float where it is level and the jet is up enough to seal. float should be set then.

Check the wiring inside the headlight case--that's where the wiring for the bar controls are connected into the main wiring harness. Look for loose or corroded connections. Try to get the starter working correctly, then concentrate on getting the engine to run. No-run usually means either no fuel into the cylinders or no spark to ignite the fire. Make sure to keep the battery charged while running the starter for testing.

Check on ebay for a shop manual or Clymer manual. owners manual won't do any good. You can usually find one ranging from 3 to 35 dollars. Also check http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums.html. It is an excellent forum for free information on anything you want to know about your XJ.

Headlamp should go out when starting,to provide more power for starting. Is the fuel making it to the engine?Trash or water in fuel system can cause it to behave this way.Clean air filter and check (test)those fuses,You should get some fuel out of the fuel system if you open the drain on the carb, catch it in a container so you can inspect it for a problem.if you dont get any thats likely to be why it doesn't start.
SOURCE: oil capacity?
Should be 3.5 Liters / quarts with the filter change. Put in 3 liters then top up as needed to get the level to the top of the viewing window.
To check your oil, bike should be level, on it's center stand, engine should NOT be running!
Any oil viscosity between 10w30 and 20w50 will work just fine. Smaller numbers if the weather's cooler and/or you only do short rides. Bigger numbers for hot weather and longer rides.
