SOURCE: 1984 Honda Shadow VT 700 Shift Problem

Based on the information you have provided I suspect a bent shift fork in your transmission. To fix it you will have to take the transmission cover off and get at that fork. Replacing the fork is probably easiest, the labor to get to it is the expensive part.

Has anyone change the transmission fluid and used anything other than Honda ATF-Z1. If so, have the fluid/filter changed in this car and use only Honda Fluid. This is the only fluid that you can use in a Honda. Even if you have used the correct fluid an fluid/filter change may help. If that is not the case then I suggest you seek out a trusted professional.

Honda atv troubleshooting

The neutral lights is not going out until the atv goes into gear. Look over the shift levers and rods that puts the vehicle into gear. Take the shift linkage loose from the engine and see if moves by itself. If all the linkages move except when attached to the engine, then the linkages could be out of adjustment (if it has multiple linkages like 4 drive) or the engine has some internal issues like trans problems or other related to the shifting mechanisms.

Honda 300 fourtrax

Shifting to neutral is a bit tricky until you get the hang of it. From first gear, shift only halfway. From second downshift only halfway. Don't do a full pull on the shifter just lightly. It takes some finesse and practice, but you will get it in no time.

Selecting 3rd gear

Do you mean you can\'t find 3rd gear or it won\'t shift into 3rd gear? If you can\'t find 3rd gear, shift all the way down to neutral, then shift up 2 clicks. On my Suzuki Boulevard S-50 (VS-800) the shift order is 1st gear down, then up for neutral, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Your crotch rocket probably also has a 6th. If the problem is that it won\'t shift into 3rd, then you had best take it to the shop as it is not readily repairable without specialized tools and knowledge.

When I shift from second gear to first, it just slips to neutral

You have a bent shift fork not engaging the slider gear properly into 1st gear. The engine will need to come out of the bike. Remove the top end, the flywheel and electrics, the clutch, shift mechanism and kick starter and a few other parts. THEN you are ready to split the gearbox to get to the crankshaft, gears and shift forks.

You will need an impact driver, flywheel puller, case splitter, torque wrench and factory service manual, plus the normal screwdriver, pliers, etc.. Alternate to the special tools is taking it to the dealer and say "Fix it". I normally tell people to take it to the shop just so they don't get into such an involved project and they have a knowing eye working on the engine.

I have a Honda XR650R 2001, in nuatural it keeps tryin to lock up

You have a bent shift fork not positioning the slider gear fully into neutral.

Alternate to the special tools is taking it to the dealer. I normally tell people to take it to the shop just so they don't get into such an involved project and they have a knowing eye working on the engine. The diagram below shows how a shift fork moves a slider gear left and right to change gears. A slightly bent shift fork is not letting the slider gear "dogs" fully dis-engage 1st gear.

Honda shadow aero 2005 VT750C shifting problem

You have a bent shift fork. This is not a repair job for the amateur. The engine comes out of the frame, turns upside down then the bottom of the gear case gets separated from the top. The entire shift drum, forks and all, gets removed and the bent fork gets replaced. The engine re-assembles in the reverse pattern.

Now what about stressed gears? Any cracked or broken slider gear dogs?

You are going to have at least 75 parts on the work bench. Was the collar on the slider gear on the left side or the right? I am trying to show you why you had best be careful. The shop charges more to fix a box of loose parts than if they fix a gearbox.

Pleas rate this solution. Thanks!
